In the small New England town of Charlestown, the local mill is about to lay off 10,000 workers. The town's minor league hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs, is doing no better. After years of failure, this will be the team's last season. Exasperated player and coach Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) lets the club's recent acquisitions, the Hanson Brothers, play. The brothers' actively violent and thuggish style of play excites the fans. Dunlop retools the team, using violence to draw big crowds.

Critics Consensus

Raunchy, violent, and very funny, Slap Shot is ultimately set apart by a wonderful comic performance by Paul Newman.

Newman often cited the role of Dunlop as one of his favorites; the performance, in all its wicked, foul-mouthed glory, is freeing to watch. No wonder Newman loved the experience.

What holds the picture together is the warmth supplied by Paul Newman. As Reggie, the player-coach of the Chiefs, a minor-league ice-hockey team, he gives the performance of his life -- to date.

Believe it or not, this leads to a moral ending, and provides a lot of laughs along the way, mostly involving foul play or foul language.

A humorous exaggeration of old school hockey, this is one of the better sports movies ever made. It's not perfect, but for what it's worth and tries to do, it succeeds.

Still one of my all time favorite comedies. I mean come on, The Hanson Brothers!

Very hard to imagine this film without Paul Newman in the central role, in which he gives a masterclass performance. The support is excellent, the "Hanson brothers" becoming a cult as a result. Just as good as it gets sports movie.

I hate sports and LOVE this movie...It actually holds up today, as not much has changed...now lip service is given to sexism...despite it still being there, everywhere. This movie APPLAUDS it with appropriate consequences.

Arguably the best sporting drama ever made. Paul Newman and the supporting cast are exceptional with such a terrifically clever and fun script that make an equally as entertaining film. The comedy works and blends wonderfully with the drama, but the latter is somewhat forgotten about in the last act.
