Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) is working with her father (Adam Trese) and uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens) to renovate an old family home to prepare it for sale. Long vacant, the house has no utilities, forcing the trio to rely on battery-operated lanterns to light their way. Sarah becomes separated from her relatives and soon finds she is trapped inside the cabin, with no contact with the outside world. Panic turns to real terror as the young woman experiences events that become increasingly ominous.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Silent House is more technically proficient and ambitious than most fright-fests, but it also suffers from a disappointing payoff.

Film-makers Lau and Kentis seem to lose their collective mojo 20 minutes in and we're left watching a mostly dark screen and listening to a great deal of random panting. Go to Full Review

It's still atmospheric enough, and like the original, has a quasi-theatrical event status. But it feels like a copy. Go to Full Review

Olsen's brilliantly nervy and detailed performance deserved a flick that knew how to house it. Go to Full Review

Really only works if you're willing to set aside any contradicting or convoluted narrative elements, at least offering up some effective atmosphere. Go to Full Review

For what feels like a very long 85-minute runtime, we’re right there with Olsen, tolerating genre clichés that can’t be made up for with flashy editing or a good performance. Go to Full Review

Albus R Apr 16, 2019 Terrifying to been, this is a movie that you'll want to cover your eyes!
Ron R Feb 27, 2019 It felt like I was right there with her! Elizabeth Olsen is awesome!
Rey M Feb 23, 2019 A descent story poorly written and directed. The final shot of her leaving the house with a clean, bodyless room behind was stupid. Not sure what writer and director were thinking. I mean you delivered the twist. The audiance now understood it. Why twist us out of the twist. Made no sense. As far as the way it was filmed, i get it, but it failed. Heres why. 50% going to love it, 50% going to hate it. Just film it normally and the you lose the 50% hate group, while the 50% love group dont care because they dont know what they missed. Also, the contineous gratuitous shots of Ms. Olsen's cleveage weren't needed. In closing Elizabeth did an excellant job with a subpar script. Not enough to recommend this movie to anyone other than a joke. See more
Albus S Nov 29, 2018 Elizabeth Olsen, like the other Olsens, need to quit acting.
Rey P Oct 14, 2018 Intriguing technological prompt, as well the settled environment for the setting, for the genre seems to instead suffered rather than to impress due to the shaky nature of a mediocre found footage flick and the familiar twist really contradicts itself into just a bad dream void. Abraham L Sep 6, 2018 Terrible idea and terrible execution of said idea. When we can see what's actually going on on-screen we have to find out what the actual plot ideas are..which are ludicrous. Good job for 99% of the time that you can't see a single bloody thing then. See more
