This is a film about human beings who can be flawed and prickly but if you go a little deeper, you will see beauty. This is a wonderfully written script, with a great performance by Paul Giamatti. Go to Full Review

My favorite scene in the film is an emotionally flattened Miles chowing down on a burger and fries while he pours a vintage bottle of wine into a Styrofoam cup while wearing a tux in a fast food shop. Giamatti made you feel all of it. Go to Full Review

Giamatti, although overlooked by the Academy, serves as the emotional anchor of the film, holding its narrative together with his compelling performance. Go to Full Review

Feb 24, 2019 Enjoyed, but really agreed that Merlot sucks.
Leia R Jan 12, 2019 Critics clearly liked this but I simply found the story to be pretentious and the male lead characters unlikable. The character Maya brought a bit of ray of light to the drudge but it wasn't enough. See more
George P Jan 5, 2019 One of my favorite films of all time. People that don't drink wine actually like this movie, too. Everyone can relate to Myles's pain. See more
Leia G Dec 30, 2018 The critics consensus says Sideways is a "mature road trip comedy," which is exactly how I'd describe it too. For some reason, that descriptor didn't appeal to me, and I put off seeing this movie until I could no longer ignore the accolades and pop-culture references (South Park's parody starring Terrence and Philip). The writing is sharp, the acting is excellent. There's a lot to be enjoyed by reading between the lines, so I believe you would be rewarded by multiple viewings. What ultimately qualifies it as a great movie is the fact all four main characters have realistic and easy-to-understand motivations, and the story flows naturally from there. The characters are three-dimensional enough to love them even for their flaws. See more
Luke R Nov 11, 2018 A brilliant innovative comedy for more than just wine lovers.
Albus W Oct 19, 2018 Paul Giamatti gives a brilliant performance in this film. I laugh a little at the pretentiousness of his character as he samples wine and detects the "faintest soupçon of, like, asparagus", but I secretly wish I had his palate and expertise. It's funny to hear him express his strong opinions, e.g. "No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!" And then his soft, touching comments on Pinot Noir, reflecting the rewards of patience and care with the grapes, that we relate to patience and care with people. His character is unlikeable at the start - a bitter, depressed, morose killjoy who seems to only one interest, wine, which he drinks in extreme amounts. He seems like an alcoholic and a drag to Thomas Haden Church's character, who is getting married in a week and wants to party on a road trip to wine country. However, as the story unfolds, we see just how much he's been hurt, and how much of a friend he really is to Church, who turns out to be quite a profligate. There are some hilarious moments between the two of them, and the women they meet, played by Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen create romantic and moral tension. Sandra Oh is fantastic, and I especially love her sassy first scene, when she's pouring wine samples and after putting up with Giamatti's attitude, pours him a giant amount on his third glass. Virginia Madsen has her moments too, such as when she tells Giamatti how she connects to wine, thinking of it as a living thing, from the year the grapes were growing to the people who tended and picked them, and then constantly evolving in the bottle. Director Alexander Payne gives us touching moments, and a nice balance of comedy, darkness, and romance in the film. There are nice shots of the wine country and small towns they're in, like Solvang, sure, but how he shoots the scene were Giamatti drunk dials his ex-wife is wonderful, amplifying the feeling of intoxication. Well done. See more
