Musical version is edgier, not as fun as animated movie.

The good-natured show...has a winningly inclusive spirit, a fantastical appeal, and a Vaudevillian comic showmanship that evoke The Wizard of Oz (surely a conscious inspiration). [Blu-ray]

There are a few off-color lines, but those should fly right over the heads of youngsters who will be more intent on the costumes and stage action. In fact, I'd say that this musical will appeal mostly to families with younger children.

Shrek the musical is a pathetic attempt to recapture the heart and humor that was Shrek. It provides with information nobody needed and as a result, lowers the enjoyment level. Shrek the musical cowards behind the far superior Shrek.

Surprisingly good - like "really good". Fun stage adaptation of Shrek - keeping the irreverent humor as well as the heart of the original film. Catchy songs, amazing costumes and make-up, great set design and a talented and dedicated cast that seems to be having a ball. This one is really worth catching. The filmed version does an excellent job of catching the stage show while keeping it dynamic and cinematic. Good stuff.
