Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Feb 17, 2021
Sholay delivers the goods, all right. It has, quite literally, everything -- action, adventure, romance, drama, comedy (very broad), musical numbers -- all superbly directed by young Ramesh Sippy. Go to Full Review
Danny Bowes RogerEbert.com Oct 20, 2017
Sholay is a grand, maximalist revel. It's the kind of movie that, while it may pass into the status of so many older movies more talked about than seen, it became that thing by being great. Go to Full Review

You can divide Hindi cinema into two eras, pre-and-post Sholay. It is a landmark. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Go to Full Review

Sholay covers every base, works all the emotions, and even today, when Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra show up, thunderous ovations result. Go to Full Review

Beyond its entertainment value, Sholay is emblematic of a nation still held in check by forces urging its people to be better than they were, but making the mistake of not confronting divides that ran deep and have since caught up with it. Go to Full Review

Hermione L Nov 23, 2018 This movie is a mixture of everything, romance, drama, thrill, action, an overall package. The 3+ hours long runtime gets a little exhausting at times but overall it's worth a five star rating. Not to forget this movie was made at the time when dramas and love stories were supposed to be the only plotline of an average Bollywood movie. Amazing writing, stunning performances, great direction. Evergreen. See more
Hermione W Jun 10, 2017 Amazing movie, one of the greatest movies of all time!
Albus R May 2, 2017 Sholay is one of India's biggest cinematic achievements. This is one film that retells a simple story of adventure and revenge. But where it becomes legendary is when it uses colourful characters with motivations and meaning to the plot carefully while also not making any person feels the tiresome three hour plot structure. This is one of those cinematic gems which can never be replicated.
