...directors like Roy William Neill brought timeless characters to life with great acting, no-nonsense direction and crisp scripting; the lack of visual jazz makes each of the Rathbone Holmes films a pleasure to watch.... Go to Full Review

One of the classic movies pairing suave gaunt Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and plump Nigel Bruce as his bumbling Boswell, Dr. Watson. Go to Full Review

The Rathbone/Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes films didn't exactly limp to a close, but it didn't go out on a high note either. Go to Full Review

...patched together from hand-me-down remnants. Director Roy William Neill and the writers seem to be just going through the motions while waiting for that final smack from the clapboard. Rathbone delivers a magnetic performance to the bitter end, though. Go to Full Review

This is another enjoyable well-paced and acted mystery thriller in the series with the usual pleasant banter between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Go to Full Review

Luke W Oct 16, 2018 A clever story where the key to money stolen plates from the treasurery, the key lies in 3 money boxes sold at auction but made by the criminal in prison who knows the whereabouts of the hidden plates . But the owners of the music boxes are at risk and holmes must solve the case before the villains get to the plates first. great stuff See more
Finn R Aug 28, 2018 Enjoyable if perfunctory Sherlock Holmes picture which finds Holmes (Rathbone) and Watson (Bruce) up against a trio of conspirators working with a prisoner who has kept mums about Treasury engraving plates that he hid somewhere in London before being nabbed. Taut, if not all that suspenseful, with the added appeal of a beautiful, yet deadly, opponent to Holmes in Mrs Courtney (Morison). See more
Han R Aug 7, 2018 The greatest Sherlock Holmes film. Basil Rathbone reprises his role as the world's detective for the last time. Rathbone concludes his 14 film run with a clever calmness and shrew intellect. Rathbone's Holmes is witty, deductive, and charming to the last. I wish there were even more of these films, but all good things must come to an end. Nigel Bruce plays Dr. Watson with an oblivious stupor as usual. His constant ramblings and stuffy musings entertain like no other. Bruce was born to play Watson. I adore this portrayal as it is always fun. Notably, Dressed to Kill includes an appearance of Holmes' foil and femme fatale, Irene Adler, on the big screen. Adler is portrayed by actress Patricia Morison. Her beauty is only matched by her versatility. Morison is my favorite of all Holmes' villains as her Adler is charming and subtle with many dire references thrown in for the audience. I love her in Dressed to Kill. In all, Basil Rathbone will always be Sherlock Holmes to me. His suave demeanor and amiable cunning are perfect as the famous detective. Nigel Bruce is so funny and likable as the bumbling Dr. Watson. Finally, Patricia Morison is wonderful as Irene Adler. In short, this is a nice sendoff for Sherlock Holmes. I love the scene with Holmes and Watson reminiscing in their apartment flat that sets off this story. See more
Ron W Jul 30, 2017 Named "Dressed to kill" because one character very briefly dresses in disguise. The only memorable part is that Watson's friend and eventual murder victim's nickname was "Stinky" which is hilarious. See more
Draco G Oct 1, 2014 The final Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes film seems vaguely drawn from one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories - isn't there one about music boxes? But the cycle has also become self-referential, referring back to their earlier movies, er, cases. It _feels_ as though Holmes is using his deductive skills to figure out the clues from the music - but his progress (on two separate occasions) is entirely due to Watson's seemingly irrelevant comments and stories. Indeed, the conclusion is so rapid and unexpected (relying on the surprise identification of Dr. S) and without a denouement or even the need to sell war bonds, the whole series just ends like that. Goodbye, my favorite Holmes. See more
Hermione M Dec 22, 2009 The swan-song for the Rathbone and Bruce Holmes series is just as good as any other entry in the series. Rathbone was 54 as he bowed out of the role of Sherlock Holmes on radio and in this film. He would play Holmes twice on television in the early and mid-1950's and once again on the stage in 1951. The play bombed however... This is a fun entry to the series and can be summed up by saying that music boxes holds the key, (see what I did there?), to the mystery. On Blu-Ray. See more
