No less a person than the ineffable Roland Young plays Watson! That in itself is worth the price of admission. Go to Full Review

There are several problems, but none of them is of compelling interest, and they are solved as much by the superior knowledge and power of the playwright as by anything Sherlock Holmes is seen to do. Go to Full Review

John Barrymore appears as the great detective himself. He is remarkably good -- better, in fact, than he has ever been before on the screen. Go to Full Review

Kylo R Jul 16, 2010 John Barrymore as Sherlock Holmes and William Powell as a villan of sorts. Tough to go wrong. This is one of the earliest surviving films from Powell's filmography. The play that served as the basis for this film was previously used for a 1916 silent French Sherlock Holmes film and was used for Rathbone and Bruce's The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes (1939). It also served as the basis for a re-written version of the play that was retouched by Rathbone's wife for Rathbone in 1951. That version of the play bombed. On Blu-Ray. See more
