What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kathleen Turner proves an ideal match for John Waters' suburban satire in Serial Mom, even if the somewhat scattershot end results often lack the expected bite.

Nevertheless, there’s an undeniable pleasure in finding a comic imagination based so exclusively on personal quirks and predilections, even when it’s less than wholly adept in telling a story. Go to Full Review

A loose remake of Female Trouble with Polyester's subversively accessible polish, Serial Mom is the strongest film of the post-midnight-movie chapter of John Waters's career. Go to Full Review

Waters may be playing it safe in the studio system, but Serial Mom, thankfully, doesn't skimp on the auteur's affinity for the weird outcast. Go to Full Review

This was a chore to get through. It was painfully unfunny and at times incredibly gross. Go to Full Review

Feb 16, 2019 I loved how the mom trolls the neighbor in her spare time.
Theodore L Jan 7, 2019 The critics over a well patinated american society is well done and very well performed by Ms. Turner that actually made a big interpretation. The direction of the other characters is also really nice and represent different sides of the main figure. That's the up (and it is a very nice up). The problem, IMO, is in the script (and/or its act). Ok is a grotesque black comedy, and a lot of things can be overlooked but this not justify everythings. Police is too stupid (is that a critic that I did not understood?) and come in overpower of man to arrest a woman that does nothing to hide or to escape; evidence in the court are completely forgotten (another critic?). Everyone drives like a stunt, c'mon this squeeze eyes to some "the blues brother" shoot, but it is not "The Blues Brother". Ok, everything can be a big critic to the whole american facade and it's "loud and clear" but it leave me without an emotion and it did not grab me neither a smile. I mean, at the end of the movie I was like at the beginning. It light me with any news about the american society and it shows what all (I think) already knows without a touch of emotion. See more
Leia L Nov 5, 2018 Serial Mom is an often under-appreciated and re-watchable jet black comedy. Extremely tame and quite mainstream for John Waters it nonetheless follows Water's general theme of poking fun at suburban middle class life in Baltimore. Turner proved the perfect choice for the title role and she seems to delight in playing such a conflicted and enigmatic psychopathic character. Mink Stole has a small but memorable part in one of the extremely few rolls where she plays a normal person. In her second role in a Waters film, a somewhat slimmed (from the first and far better "Hairspray") is excellent as Beverly's pie-eyed and lovestruck adolescent daughter. Had she not died well before the film, I suspect Waters would have used the bizarre Edith Massey in the roll given to Patricia Hearst. For someone who wants to explore Waters' subversive work, Serial Mom is an excellent introduction before being exposed to the likes of Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble. See more
Han S Aug 28, 2018 Fantastic movie, runs just long enough to stay fresh and fun. Has light gore and mild language but delivers on that dark comedy gold. See more
Hermione R Aug 16, 2018 Smart, relevant and absolutely hilarious, Serial Mom is a brilliant satire of the atrocity and glorification of murder.
Han G Jul 14, 2018 John Waters doing his shtick - unfortunately with diminishingly rewarding results. Kathleen Turner, murdering her neighbours for tiny transgressions of taste, like a picket fence Travis Bickle should be ninety minutes of delirious bad taste, but it's all too flabby and wanly performed and doesn't go anywhere. Sam Waterston is wasted, Ricki Lake too, and Turner is poorly directed. A movie that has dated badly. See more
