After a live action sequence in which Walt Disney himself gives a tour of his animation studios in California, the action shifts to South America where a collection of both stock and new characters appear in a series of shorts. In one segment, Donald Duck (Clarence Nash) attempts to navigate Lake Titicaca with an uncooperative llama, and in another, a brave little airplane crosses the dangerous Andes. Meanwhile, Goofy (Pinto Colvig) tries to act like a local in the Pampas.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

One of Disney's lesser-known animated films, Saludos Amigos may be slight stuff, but it's still a spirited, energetic travelogue.

There definitely is a lot of history to be found in Saludos Amigos, but hard to say that there’s much else beyond that. Go to Full Review

While Saludos Amigos might not be the most iconic Disney feature and it is far from the best, the film still carries a unique magic and identity that makes it worthwhile to check out at least once. Go to Full Review

Anakin L Mar 1, 2019 I was bored out of my mind watching this. The issue is that it's in Disney TV animation style, so a lot of the artistry is gone, and it's a very badly aged pseudodocumentary for children about South American countries. There are a couple of good songs and it's somewhat informative on teaching Spanish words to children, but it otherwise was not entertaining in the slightest, and the stories felt cheap and dull. Best thing about it was that even though the DVD cover said it was 75 minutes, it was only 42 minutes. Not convinced that this should be considered one of their "full-length animated classics." Ron Feb 10, 2019 People are usually more harsh to the Disney package films, and I never understood why because these weren't supposed to be big films in the first place. It may be surprising, but I personally enjoy Saludos Amigos. One of the big reasons is because I always liked to see is the Disney animators themselves on screen. I only wished that they had more time on screen because I am an animator myself. Something I always liked to see the animators at work and see the work they create. I do enjoy the Jose character and think he's a great companion to Donald Duck. There are great animated sequences including Donald with the camel and the little airplane with the great storm sequence. The best thing in the film is the last sequence with the watercolor being used in Brazil. It's where the film is the most imaginative. While the Goofy sequence is decent, I feel it wasn't best to have one of his cartoons in the film. I feel there could have been a more sophisticated cartoon in its place as it's mostly just Goofy messing up. It is humurous, but there could've been more to it. While it is only 43 minutes long, I do forgive it as it was in a tight spot to be made during the war. While not many people enjoy it, it's a short film I don't mind watching for it does have a couple of elements to it you never see in other Disney films. 3/4 See more
Hermione L Apr 1, 2018 It wasn't as fun or as entertaining as it should have been. "Saludos Amigos" feels like a postcard sent from South America but it lacks the charm of a good Disney movie. See more
Albus R Nov 12, 2017 Its sort of a early documentary / featurette with a bit of culture and some decent Disney animated shorts.
Luke S Nov 3, 2011 Disney's first package film Saludos Amigos is an okay, but mostly forgettable effort. The animation is actually pretty good for its small budget, the score is fitting the location and the last segment Aquarela do Brasil is the highlight of the film as it features artistic animation and terrific humorous interactions between Donald Duck and ever amusing Jose Carioca. But all of the other segments are pretty uninspired and far from memorable unfortunately leading to a slim, pretty dated travelogue. See more
