What to Know

Critics Consensus

Power Rangers has neither the campy fun of its TV predecessor nor the blockbuster action of its cinematic superhero competitors, and sadly never quite manages to shift into turbo for some good old-fashioned morphin time.

It doesn't take itself too seriously and it lets itself have a good time and be full of joy. It's about friendship and family and teens being teens. Go to Full Review

The loneliness and anxiety experienced by each of the characters perfectly captures how hard it can be to grow up. The fact that the teenagers all come from different backgrounds and are of different ethnicities is the cherry on top of the cake. Go to Full Review

It is great to say that while Power Rangers is no cinematic masterpiece, it is a fine start to a franchise that has been resurrected and thrown back into the limelight. Go to Full Review

Han W Apr 25, 2019 It is like hooking up with your fat ex from middle school, you know your inner child is screaming, but your outer adult is not so sure See more
Rey S Apr 23, 2019 Surprisingly great movie with a coming of age hint to it! With all of the other superhero-ish franchises out there today I'd say they fared very well. I didn't find the storyline to be boring. There was always something happening. There were a few minor things that weren't explained very well but they didn't take away from the whole film. I thought the actors were good choices for the characters. Most of all we didn't get a long drawn out fight scene that has been seen in a lot of recent superhero action films. They set it up for a sequel/"follow up", which I hear is in the works. I'm actually looking forward to it. See more
Apr 19, 2019 Awesome movie! The Best representation of Power Rangers so far!
Han G Apr 19, 2019 it was ok, i guess for kids (yes I know that's probably a stupid thing to say). A bit low level on some of the story line, script (hence the kids comment). Came across as a cheap make of potential blockbuster movie. Watched it all - so it wasn't 'that' bad!! See more
Apr 18, 2019 Even though I was never a Power Rangers fan, I was left disappointed because my curiosity got my hopes up. I was hoping it would be surprisingly enjoyable, like Monster Trucks, and I know Power Rangers has a fanbase, and they seem to love this movie. However, I think only Power Rangers fans will get the most out of this film. For the uninitiated, this movie couldn't be more formulaic. The movie did start out as a promising origin movie that felt like The Breakfast Club meets Chronicle, even if the character introductions felt forced. The cast was decent and I was interested to see what would happen next after a group of teenagers found five different coloured coins that gave them superpowers. I was interested to see how each of these characters would handle the responsibility of having superpowers. I went into this knowing very little about Power Rangers, but as the movie progressed, it just got more generic. Structurally, the movie reminded me of Man of Steel, which was a character-driven origin movie, and all the death and destruction and action was in the third act. But Man of Steel had more interesting characters. Not because it's about Superman, but because Superman's (or Clark Kent's) conflicting nature made him a compelling main character, even if the movie overall was just average. The characters in Power Rangers, however, are pretty stereotypical and forgettable. You have a jock that's leading the Power Rangers (who, of course, is the main character), the autistic nerd who's a victim of bullying, the Asian rebel, the bitchy former cheerleader, and the misunderstood outsider who questions her sexuality in one scene, and three of these characters meet in detention. For a movie based on a TV show about kicking ass and fighting funny-looking monsters, there's very little of it. The majority of the movie is about the Power Rangers training to be Power Rangers. That would be fine if the characters were more interesting and the tone wasn't jarring. The movie wants to be gritty and serious, but also campy, cheesy, and ridiculous, and fails to do both. It's neither as epic as a modern blockbuster nor as campy as the TV show that the movie is based on. It doesn't commit to one tone, and because of that, the deeper and more emotional moments in the film just wasn't riveting, such as the campfire scene because the scene before that had Rita Repulsa eating gold. The scenes with Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks) was, honestly, the best part of the movie. She embraced the ridiculousness of the source material and her performance was so campy and hilarious that it was enjoyable to watch, and she seemed to enjoy playing her role as well. But because she was the only one who embraced the campiness of the source material, her character felt like she belonged in a different film. Bill Hader as Alpha 5 was quite witty, but Bryan Cranston seemed like he couldn't care less about the movie he's in. Also, the shameless Krispy Kreme product placement was annoying and laughable at the same time. It starts off as a product placement, but then it becomes integral to the plot, as the Power Rangers have to protect something that they call a Krispy Kreme, and Rita Repulsa stops in a middle of a fight to eat a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Overall, it's not a terrible movie. I enjoyed certain moments in the film, particularly the scenes with Elizabeth Banks, but it's just not campy or entertaining enough. If you're a Power Rangers fan, you'll probably enjoy this film. If you're not, you're better off watching better blockbusters, such as Logan, Kong: Skull Island, or even Beauty and the Beast. Theodore S Apr 16, 2019 My whole family enjoyed this film. Loved the suits. Actors did a fine job. We are really wanted to see a continuation to this film with a second. Now that they are bonded together, there is a lot the film could do with the characters and story line. We hope to even see a third where Rita makes her appearance again. See more
