Critics Consensus

With Audrey Hepburn luminous in her American debut, Roman Holiday is as funny as it is beautiful, and sets the standard for the modern romantic comedy.

It is purely a rom-com, filmed with warmth and style – as sweet and inconsequential as a scoop of gelato on a summer’s day.

The best, GREATEST romcom movie ever made!

Beautiful, sad, touching and captivating. Two people abandon society's expectations for a moment of escape. Hepburn's performance is incredible and the relationship that develops between her and Peck is unbelievable. I honestly didn't know how they would sell me on the idea of his character being redeemable or her knowing the truth about him without painting an ugly picture about their whole affair. But when you realize he has been going along and doing what's expected of him this whole time, only to have a moment like she has had this whole day--to realize he doesn't have to be this thing he's become. And almost the entire final act hitting hardest when not a single word was said. This film is freaking incredible.

Roman Holiday is a sweet and innocent rom-com and truly a timeless classic.

Undeniably charming, Hepburn's debut continues to feel modern and true to life, even as these characters, who belong to a defunct world of exalted monarchy and honorable journalism, explore an even more ancient city. Despite the narrative being constrained to a single day, Wyler allows the romance between Hepburn and Peck to develop slowly and organically, in small moments and minor details a lesser movie would pass over-a water heater in the corner, tipping a taxi driver, reminiscing over just developed photos-but which here give the movie its sense of authenticity and vitality. The comedy may not be up to the standards of those more contemporary rom-coms which owe their existence to this one, but the romance and passion and chemistry feel like they haven't aged a day, as eternal and impossibly phantasmic as the Eternal City of Rome itself, the city of perpetual desire, where nothing lasts forever except its self-perpetuation.
