What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's noticeably subject to the law of diminishing returns, but Rocky III still has enough brawny spectacle to stand in the ring with the franchise's better entries.

It would be true to say that Stallone has improved as a director, delivering a short, almost staccato movie which zips through the whole fable fast enough to prevent familiarity breeding contempt. Go to Full Review

Stallone is distinctly at his best when the film takes off into almost abstract montages of ;music or images, or in the nifty choreography of the fights. Go to Full Review
Nigel Andrews Financial Times Sep 24, 2020
Rocky was a right hook that hit satisfying home: Rocky II was a good follow-up left: Rocky III is a redundant flurry of fisticuffs long after the match has been won and the referee has raised the victor's arm. Go to Full Review

It’s amusing that the filmmakers can continue to use the existing actors in new ways, this time having Creed serve as a trainer and ally. Go to Full Review

All up I think this is probably the best of the Rocky films in visual terms, but its story is severely lacking and its depth is non-existent. Go to Full Review

The Survivor song, "Eye of the Tiger," might be the best thing about this film which has Rocky going against Mr. T as Rocky's adversary. Go to Full Review

Luke P Feb 20, 2019 As I found Rocky II enjoyable, emotional and very funny, I expected the same from Rocky III, but the result A film about friendship and cocky characters. The film is the most brutal Rocky film due to the knuckle crunching violence made by Thunderlips and Clubber Lang. I am very surprised that Hulk Hogan was in this film. The fight scene between Rocky and Thunderlips was one of the funniest Rocky fights that I have seen. Mr T's performance in this movie is one of the lamest and worst performance I've ever seen. Mainly all he done was keep making strange noises throughout which I found very annoying. He even got nominated for a Razzie for worst supporting actor. Let's talk about the training scene with Apollo Creed being his trainer: This film had a better training sequence because it wasn't like the training scene from Rocky II, a copy of the first film's training scene and the training actually had a storyline, it was funny and it worked without Mickey being his trainer. Now let's swifty move onto a movies downgrade plot holes: When Mickey is in the locker room suffering from almost death, when Rocky told Adrian to look after him, wouldn't she perform CPR on him because that could of saved his life. I know that this isn't really a Rocky III plot holes but in this film his dog Butkus disappears for some odd reason. That is the only plot hole that I noticed. The film introduces the best song ever made for a movie The Eye Of Tiger, I love that song. Despite the terrible performance by Mr. T, Rocky III is actually a funny sequel with some emotional moments at times and those funny and epic fight scenes which will always keeps me on the edge of my seat. This is much more boring than its predecessor due to its predictability and it is like the first few, expect that he lost his first fight with Clubber Lang. For Rocky and Mr. T fans, have a watch. Ron W Feb 13, 2019 " I pity the fool who came up with this idea " ..... " Brother " Mr.T and Hulk Hogan.... So now Sly thinks he can bring in big names . So so very wrong. The wrestling scene is terrible MR.T turns up as B.A. as he only as one tone and 35 yrs on the only thing anyone remembers is the song.... Again Sly getting his mates to do the music from here on. As a 9 year old I loved it , as a grown up it's a big let down. See more
Leia S Feb 12, 2019 Nowhere near as good as it predecessor and Mr T was extremely bad in it
Feb 2, 2019 The best movie song ever sung: Eye of the Tiger!
Harry R Jan 27, 2019 (88/100) Rocky III finishes the first Rocky trilogy in a satisfying and very contained way. I loved Sylvester Stallone's (Rocky Balboa) chemistry with Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed), it really was the best thing in the movie and it really helped with making the trilogy a contained story. My only problem with the movie is that it has the same formula as the other Rocky movies and nothing really changes in the way it approaches the general story: Get knocked down, train really hard, win. But, again, the movie manages to be entertaining in the way it brings you this story. In Rocky II it was the struggle of not wanting to fight but having to in order to maintain your family, in Rocky III it is the struggle of finding a new mentor and adapting to new things, getting to know different styles and pushing yourself to do things you never thought possible. Overall, Sylvester Stallone knows how to direct a movie and knows how to write a story, and he does it pretty good, making Rocky III a worthwhile addition to the Rocky franchise. See more
Leia R Jan 15, 2019 Not as good as the previous installments but Rocky 3 has enough wacky action and touching drama to entertain us.
