After getting canned from his advertising job, down-and-out divorcé Bill Rago (Danny DeVito) gets a gig teaching English at a nearby army base. There, he takes on a group of underachieving students from poor backgrounds who seem apathetic about their education. Bill becomes frustrated, but finally turns the class around when he begins discussing "Hamlet." However, Sgt. Cass (Gregory Hines), a hardened drill instructor, is skeptical of Bill's teaching methods.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Renaissance Man tries to simultaneously be a literary comedy, an inspirational drama, and a star vehicle that caters to Danny DeVito's strengths, but proves to be a master of none.

There's a fine line between delighting an audience and pandering to it. "Renaissance Man" leapfrogs across the line. Go to Full Review

This is a feel good movie which is too mechanically put together to make you feel anything. Go to Full Review

Jan 4, 2019 A wonderful movie. If uncertain about viewing, note the difference between the critics ratings and the audience rating... and on Amazon this movie has a solid 4.5 of 5. As the synopsis indicates it set on a military base and is about semi-literate "boots". What the synopsis does not give you the evolution of the characters as the film progresses. Nor does it tell you that you become vested in these characters. As a note, my wife is a special education teacher and has shown this to her classes to demonstrate "challenged learners" succeeding - her students love this film. See more
George S Dec 29, 2018 This is what movies should be.
Theodore W Dec 13, 2018 Great movie. My favorite.
Finn S Jul 13, 2018 Renaissance Man is a disappointing film. It is about a failed businessman who is hired by the army to teach a group of underachieving recruits in order to help them pass basic training. Danny DeVito and Gregory Hines give horrible performances. The script is badly written. Penny Marshall did a terrible directing this movie. I was not impressed with the motion picture. See more
Hermione S Jun 5, 2018 I loved this film. It introduced a plethora of characters, both complex and simple. Danny Devito shines in this role. He plays the part of a failed advertising agent who finds a job as an English teacher in the army. See more
Theodore R Feb 14, 2018 Really good movie. Talks about a businessman who was forced to take a teaching job for the United States army. They teach "Dumb" soldiers how to pass basic training but, instead he teaches them how to read and love to read Shakespeare. I give it 4/5 Stars. See more
