Critics Consensus

Ready Player One is a sweetly nostalgic thrill ride that neatly encapsulates Spielberg's strengths while adding another solidly engrossing adventure to his filmography.

A heckin fun movie, full of stunning action sequences and laughs and winks at the kids who grew up watching Back to the Future and Jurassic Park and E.T. and Indiana Jones. Go to Full Review

It's pure entertainment, and gives Spielberg an easel to prop his sentimental painting on, and all the colors on his palette to do so. Go to Full Review

For all its ferocious energy, Ready Player One strikes me as the product of a cinema of exhaustion-it's a film about having come too far and being at the end of something, where extraordinary things no longer mean much, or have become toxic. Go to Full Review

Ready Player One is infinitesimally less than the sum of its many, many parts. Hollywood has never made such a convincing, and expensive, argument for staying home and browsing Netflix. Go to Full Review

With its daring digital delights and hero worship hurricane of pop culture, this new blockbuster reaffirms the astonishment that made Steven Spielberg a master of popcorn and escapism. Go to Full Review

Ready Player One is perfectly entertaining and enticing, but the sum of its parts ends up significantly less realized than its full potential. Go to Full Review

Hagrid R Apr 28, 2019 Entertaining enough to watch once, but despite the cool CGI and intriguing (yet unoriginal) premise, the poor writing will keep you from rewatching. Even the main characters are extremely shallow, the side characters are hardly even people. The terrible romance between the main characters that was shoehorned in will make you cringe. The movie ultimately feels like a baby boomer trying to make a movie about video games despite not playing any since the 80s. Very out of touch with reality and it's audience. See more
Albus R Apr 27, 2019 This movie is a good version of the story from the original novel. It is not a perfect replication of the book by any means, but, it does work well as a film for those who do not deeply care about the book. The main character is likable and the movie features a supporting cast that actively helps our hero to progress. Ben Mendelsohn plays the villain and as seen in other films he is quite capable of doing so. The visual effects are fun and the world building is very well done, the plot itself is nothing special but just the visual world building mixed with references makes this movie as enjoyable as it is. Hermione S Apr 26, 2019 Wow, where to start? Ok, firstly, I really wanted to like this movie. I had the biggest expectations for these movie, but, boy! how can a movie be so ruined for a bad approach. I want to specify that I am a big fan of Spielberg, the 80's was his decade, the absolute king: ET, Raiders of the lost Ark. Poltergeist, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he wrote Goonies. I mean, he was the absolute king of those years, I loved all of his movies, and I really enjoyed that decade because of him. But...(massive spoiler alert) ... to try to package that decade in a virtual world and to force the teenagers of the 2045 year to like and obsess with that decade is nonsensical and with no logic. And the premise, that a guy who was a teen in the 80's and 50 years later, create a virtual world with clues hidden in 80's references, is even more absurd. I can't imagine Steve Jobs creating new hardware and services if he still was thinking in the 70's or 80's. Or Bill Gates developing new Windows versions in 2000 or 2010 with 80's touches. I lived in the 80's. I loved that decade, but to be honest, if I am going to see a movie taken place in 2045, the last thing I want to see is to reenect the past. That is what it's exciting about future: the new possibilities. In fact, all of the reference to the 80's look forced. I hated the soundtrack, I hated the excesive references to pop culture of that decade: Duran Duran, Thriller and Buckaroo Banzai. Really? I didn't even know that movie existed. How do you think the teenagers of 2018 will even feel about it if me, a guy who lived in the 80's had no idea of what movie was that? And considering the main character: what kind of teenager gets obsessed with pop culture of 60 years ago? It's as if me in the 80's would have been obsessed with Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Swing Dance, radio programs and books of the 20's. Can you picture that? How can a person bypass 60 years of new ways of entertainment? Both, the creator of the Oasis and the main character. Spielberg produced "Back to the Future", and he must remember that the movie was funny because Marty McFly was totally lost with the universe he discovers 30 years in the past, 30 years!! That is how a normal teenager reacts to a world diferent to his own time. And this guy, Wade, is interested in pop culture of 50 years ago. That has no logic. From that on, the movie is completely absurd. They try to construct a virtual universe based in a programming genius with an Obsesive Disorder for the 80's, but to be honest, it's not interesting, not creative, and it feels almost like a claustrophobical homage to a man obsessed with a decade and his childhood. Not to mention, the holes of the plot for the lost of the civil rights of the poor people of the future, pursued and murdered by an evil corporation with complete impunity. Only at the end you can see there is still lawyers and law enforcement agents in 2045. Finally, to close the movie, the main character, talks about...the Rosebud of the creator of the Oasis. Oh my god! seriously??? Do you think Millenials and Post Millenials guys even know what does that word mean? Do you think that they have the small idea about what movie that word makes reference? They must have been so lost at that last scene that I almost feel sorry for them. I picture them with their smartphones googling the word in the theater. Now it turns out that our teenager, Wade, is also an expert in "Citizen Kane" and the 40's. 100 years before his current time. Come on!! One star for the animation. The rest of the movie my mind totally rejected: plot, 80's soundtrack, 80's references, even the 70's references. Sorry, Steven. What happens in the 80's stays in the 80's, like Vegas . See more
Harry P Apr 26, 2019 A unique film, sorely needed in the modern day arena of cliched blockbusters. Ready Player One is dragged along mostly by Spieldberg's assured direction and a taut but fascinating plot, and stops this nostalgia driven ride from missing its mark. See more
Harry L Apr 26, 2019 I personally enjoyed the film. Mixing the most popular movies & games from the 80's & 90's and with the new millennium games, movies - it was beyond nostalgic for me. See more
Apr 24, 2019 A movie with great potential. A movie with too many cringy 'love' story and soo much uneeded supsense.
