The Rat Pack

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While it evokes its time period with a keen sense of swagger, The Rat Pack is troubled by uneven lead performances and fairly routine biopic trappings.

Steve Johnson Chicago Tribune Mar 8, 2021
This depiction of the Rat Pack, in their misogynistic, racist, mob-friendly fullness, feels rounded and human in a way that some of the most dewy-eyed remembrances of Sinatra, at the time of his death, were not. Go to Full Review

It's a diffused, pointless, tabloid drama rendered, for the most part, in stilted, waxworks fashion. Go to Full Review

Sinatra's image is just too fresh and idiosyncratic to allow for the suspension of disbelief that The Rat Pack requires, even if Liotta had had a better handle on Sinatra's charisma than he demonstrates here. Go to Full Review

It's not a home-run swing, but it reaches extra bases for what it has to say about a certain male swagger that's been lost and how upward mobility will take you only as far as the real powers say you can go. Go to Full Review

Nov 6, 2018 "Rat Pack" (1998) was a very entertaining film & it was a pretty easy sit. Might be slow or boring to some but if you like the era, performers, and lifestyles that this film is portraying then it might very well satisfy you. There are many solid performances in this film like Ray Liotta (Though not much resembling or behaving like Frank Sinatra) still gives an enthralling performance as our lead character. Liotta delivers a pretty interesting take on the iconic Sinatra and proves his status as an amazing and charismatic actor. I was happy to see this movie didn't glance over or ignore Sinatra's personal issues and didn't entirely demonize him or any of our leads for any short comings. They still gave our characters humanity. Joe Mantegna was also a great choice to play the iconic legend, "King Of Cool" Dean Martin though I didn't quite get that suave personality that Dean Martin was so well known for from Mantegna. I bought his performance when it came to his funny one liners and I also bought his looks as Martin. Mantegna definitely looks the part but I didn't exactly buy it 100% when it came to his coolness. It always seemed like an actor trying to act cool for the part instead of being genuinely cool. I don't blame Montegna for it since he did seem to be giving it his all. So don't get me wrong, it was still a great performance. Don Cheadle was fantastic as Sammy Davis Jr. I was totally convinced with his performance. I almost felt as if I was watching Sammy himself. The actor William Peterson looked nothing like President Kennedy but he was still okay as the 35th president. Not a great choice to play the part but he still did his best. Zeljko Ivanek was great as Bobby Kennedy and Robert Miranda was also good as the infamous mobster Sam "Momo" Giancana. Altogether this movie was fun, it's not without it's flaws but nothing was truly ruining the movie. There were times when the story could drag a tiny bit and the story as a whole isn't fantastic. Many of the plot points only seemed to just be moments that the film makers thought they had to tell but I will give the film props for showing actual historical moments in the Pack's lives. If you're a fan of the actual singers or if you like seeing great actors sing classic songs you'll probably enjoy this movie. While not for every audience this film is entertaining enough. Great portrayals of iconic people, outstanding musical numbers, lovely shots, & a capable director and cast all come together to breathe life into this movie while proving "Rat Pack" can captivate most audiences. If you have the time and are already interested in giving this film a watch I would absolutely recommend doing so. If you are a fan of the actors or a fan of the men they are portraying I am willing to bet you will find something in this film to grab you. If you can find a way to make this movie available to you for a viewing give it a watch the chances are low that you will end up hating it. "Rat Pack" is worth a watch! See more
