What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its gruesome scares may nauseate more than thrill, but Rabid bites into its story with distinct sophistication and thought-provoking themes.

Here is an extremely violent, sometimes nauseating, picture about a young woman affected with rabies, running around Montreal infecting others. Go to Full Review

Ultimately Rabid boils down to zombified sluts and shock moments but it's an irresistible combination that Cronenberg handles well. Go to Full Review

This disturbing film lacks the stomach-churning claustrophobia of Shivers, but is an altogether slicker affair, and the spiralling, random violence still shocks. Go to Full Review

Anakin R Apr 28, 2019 So bad it's almost good. Another TCM surprise.
Theodore M Apr 27, 2019 A decent horror flick, not great but decent. The plot is the 'decent' part. A different plot could have been developed differently and made this a really good horror movie. A plastic surgery clinic preforms an untested, experimental procedure on Chambers after she is burned in a motorcycle accident. As a result of the surgery Chambers develops a thirst for human blood, the only nourishment she can ingest, and a really weird physical manifestation as a means to obtain blood. She develops a vagina in her left armpit. However, instead of being a nice place for penises to enter, whenever she needs blood and she senses a victim is falling into her clutches, a penis emerges from she armpit vagina. To be even more weird, instead of semen emerging from this armpit vagina penis to please women, a needle emerges to drain life-giving blood and sexual satisfaction for Chambers. She always orgasms while draining her victims. Each of her victims then becomes a combination of rabid (Hence the name) like being vampire that needs blood and further passes on the malady, spreading it in epidemic proportions. Thankfully the infected are fairly easy to kill. The ending is very weak! Watch and see if you agree. This is NOT a Marilyn Chambers porno flick. There is only one decent scene of her ta-tas and two other lesser scenes showing those famous breasts. I had forgotten how small her breasts were... Oh, well, when you reach 'celebratory' fame I guess it doesn't matter as much... See more
Ron S Aug 30, 2018 An early David Cronenberg flick, a man that has done a few gems and some horror classics in my book. This is the typical zombie story, only with a hot lady, Rose, as the main disease spreader. Rose is involved in a motocycle accident and needs some surgery. This gives her some sort of addiction too blood so she takes a bite of people, mostly men, that comes near her. She never turn a zombie herself, but people she bites turns ugly and bubling of green salvia - real old school zombie looks. They turn out te be everywhere. The Rose character is actually acted out by a porn star but she is not that bad as an actress, really. This is not a big hit for me. Kind of funny at times and a few twists makes sure it's not a total flop but the story is way too typical and I feel that Cronenberg's strenght is originality and that lacks here. The pace is a bit slow, it feels repitative and it's never scary, just semi gory. 4.5 out of 10 Santa killers. See more
Ron R Aug 20, 2018 A bunch of disconnected ideas don't make a film, and so this bizarre movie feels more like an amalgam of unripe ideas thrown together without a clear purpose (much like Shivers before it), making me wonder why Cronenberg cast a porn movie actress as a grotesque sexual predator. Theodore R Jul 4, 2018 Better than average virus/plague film. Shot in Montreal and environs on a low budget but is made up for in a good story line, decent acting and well paced. Never jump out of your seat scary yet worth a gander if you have 90 minutes to burn Also, great to see some 1970's fashion hits and misses! See more
Kylo S Apr 30, 2018 Easy to forget that - before his masterpiece The Fly - David Cronenberg wrote and directed some of the worst horror movies of all time. Rabid has a gossamer-thin and nonsensical plot - couple on motorbike crash near a cosmetic surgery. While recuperating, girl develops vampiric armpit and goes on a rampage. It's also burdened with some truly awful performances, narcoleptic editing and woeful (library?) music. In its favour, it's not Shivers or Scanners. See more
