The story's nuts and bolts, for instance, need drastic tightening. Go to Full Review

The awe-inspiring final image in the film (of another daybreak, echoing the film's opening) is similarly slippery, catching Zac on a liminal, limbic shoreline between multiverse cosmology and hard eschatology. Go to Full Review

Lawrence is compelling, and as a balding, middle-aged man is a refreshing lead for a movie that, if made in Hollywood now, would star Will Smith, Tom Cruise, or whoever the hot, young, brooding leading man of the hour happens to be. Go to Full Review

Murphy ensures that the film is laced with a very singular brand of Kiwi humour. Go to Full Review

One could never repeat an effort like The Quiet Earth; it stands alone in a universe that seems to be itself completely an original. Go to Full Review

Mar 17, 2019 With a feeling of no expense spared along with an interesting script The Quiet Earth does an admirable job on its first attempt of showing the rest of the film industry New Zealand can make good science-fiction films. While the idea of the last man on Earth had already been seen before the script takes unusual turns with its religious versus science debates. The ending itself is definitely open to interpretation with this in mind. What stops Geoff Murphy's film from being better is a lack of plot drive as well as a sense of urgency not just by its characters but by its director. The Quiet Earth however still remains a film worth watching and bar his second unit work on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003) still remains his best work. See more
Albus P Nov 14, 2018 This is one of the best films I have seen with an ending that shook me at the time of viewing and I still remember it. The Quiet Earth follows the basic apocalypse template: stranded humans all alone on deserted earth and makes a show out of it. Featuring great scenes shot in amazing New Zealand this film proves why independent films are so important to cinema- they bring out the true artist. Budget constraints only add to the creativity. Quiet Earth features local actors and it works in the favor of the film. The pacing is excellent, and the ending will surely stun you. (An unheard of scifi film that you must watch if you are a scifi fan). See more

Theodore M Mar 20, 2018 Save your money. Do not trust eBay ratings where a selected group of shills get the call. This film received 5 stars from all 'selected'-key word- viewers which sold me. It is dumb from the opening shot and boring throughout. See more
Poe P Oct 6, 2017 A guy wakes up and finds himself all alone. There is no one left in the world. He search around his city, and tries to make contact with people and cities all over the world through his job radio, but there is no answering. He is alone. A fantastic setting and plot, really. Well, not to spoil it, but he finds someone. Actually two people. What will they do? Can they make things go back to normal or is their destiny written? Cool execution, at least the first part of it. It get's a bit tiring after an hour or so and that's really sad. I've hear that the idea for the film is taken from a travelling fella that found himself lost in New Zealand as he came there on a sunday where the Zealanders usally takes weekends off and sleep late. He felt deserted, he felt like the last man on earth. That's cool. Actually the first sci-fi film done in the country as well. Anyhow, a pretty engaging movie that's more clever than action filled. Interesting film that sadly fades out a bit to soon for a pretty slow, but good, finale. 7 out of 10 raw eggs in champagne. See more
