The film’s best attribute is its puppet effects, but their impact is lost in an unnecessarily complicated and poorly explained plot. So much time is spent on an unnecessary psychic aspect of the story that our main character is barely a character at all. Go to Full Review

This is low-budget horror done right. Go to Full Review

While the climax unfolds in an impressive combo of upsetting dentistry, medieval medicine and orthopedic brutality, this is all over the place tonally in a way a first installment should not feel and suffers from leaving the most boring characters alive. Go to Full Review

I think the principle sin that Puppet Master commits is that it takes itself too seriously. The dialog and story make very little sense, but they keep at it. When the script falters and becomes boring, they keep shoving it down your throat. Go to Full Review

With some weird, awesome puppets, a nice finale, and an interesting theme hovering over it all, Puppetmaster's a unique piece of the late '80s. Go to Full Review

While the movie has terrific atmosphere and set designs, it's the iconic posse of killer puppets that have cemented Puppet Master in horror history as a campy cult classic. Go to Full Review

Jan 29, 2019 While it may be slow at some parts this film is the peak of straight to dvd with excellent puppetry 1989 could offer and menorable characters See more
Hagrid G Jan 15, 2019 I reluctantly give it a 2.5 stars. It had much potential with the puppets. I found it confusing and not very direct on explaining who the characters were, what they were(they were 3 psychics working with 2 researchers,1 being deceased i read in wiki plots),where they were, and their objective. The puppets were really cool and should have been more in the spotlight. I really wanted to love this film but it turned out not great in the story part of it. See more
George S Nov 13, 2018 The puppets are very cool and the atmosphere is creepy. Overacting adds to the silliness.

Draco W Mar 25, 2018 The idea was good, but the execution was terrible. I got lost with what little plot there was because the opening scene took 15 minutes to go through with one scene that could have been cut in half. And the ending was just thrown at you like a bus. You can't just do a double cross that easy. The puppets were fantastic and superseded their human actors by far. See more
Abraham L Feb 16, 2018 We start in a big luxurious hotel back in the 1930's. Some sinister looking men come for William Hickey, who hides a trunk of living puppets he has made before sadly exiting the film. Cut to the present day (1989), and we're introduced to a bunch of psychics including Paul Le Mat who are summoned to the same hotel to find out that their colleague has died and asked for them all to come. Now nothing much happens except for the puppets killing people. I have watched this film twice and still seem incapable of absorbing much of anything from the last hour. I can see why this spawned a franchise because the puppets are kind of cool (although a puppet that spits up leeches is a pretty stupid idea), but they haven't seemed to come up with any ideas about what to do with their cool concept. I generally like Le Mat, but damn is he just sleepwalking through this film. Barbara Crampton has a glorified cameo early in the film that serves to remind you how much you wish she was actually in this film. This is the film that kicked off Full Moon, and was originally supposed to be released theatrically, but was dumped straight-to-video, establishing the pattern for that company. I generally like their stuff, but this is an inauspicious beginning. See more
