Former mental patient Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is once again operating his infamous motel. Assisted by the shifty Duane Duke (Jeff Fahey), Norman keeps up the semblance of being sane and ordinary, but he still holds on to some macabre habits. Eventually, Norman becomes interested in Maureen Coyle (Diana Scarwid), a troubled tenant who's been staying on a long-term basis and reminds him of someone from his past. As Norman and Maureen begin a relationship, can he keep his demons in check?

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While it can't come close to the original's elemental horror, Psycho III makes a persuasive -- and blackly funny -- case for itself as a sequel.

this knowing sequel, unable to free itself of its established serial tropes, is inevitably a tragic romance. Go to Full Review

It fails any sequel's acid test: It feeds off the original without deepening it. Go to Full Review

It is still fun to watch Perkins slowly reveal Norman's overwhelming compulsions and he remains the central reason for seeing the film. Go to Full Review

…few third sequels have much to offer, but in the hands of star-turned-director Anthony Perkins, Psycho III plays engagingly with dark toy-box of the original film, and proved there was still a bit of creative juice in the Norman Bates legacy…. Go to Full Review

Spends a lot of time trying to undo its predecessor’s problems. Albeit to a considerably less committed degree, it does as good a job as it can to go somewhere deeper while meeting the ante of lurid thrills. Go to Full Review

Draco G Dec 21, 2018 It can not be said to be a bad movie, but it also can not be said to be a very good movie. I thought the film had a rather bad and very unconventional argument; I also thought that the film is a bit unnecessary (since "Psycho II" ended up in a perfect way). I think the film left a lot to be desired and I think the public deserves more. I think it was here that the saga "Psycho" died. I recommend it, but I think there are better movies. See more
Theodore M Oct 26, 2018 Its not scary or anything new in the franchise... its just more of the same. Which is good if you're a fan of the franchise. Anthony Perkins is amazing as usual, portraying Norman perfectly. He does such a great job. The cinematography again is great. Good shots of the Motel/House's exterior, great shot at the coventry to start, and the diner is still cosy and quaint. I'm so glad they haven't changed the formula. Better kills would be nice, as well as adding to his story/legend in meaningful ways. See more
Luke S Apr 6, 2018 3/5. It's not as good as the first two movies, but Psycho III is totally ok. There aren't many kills, but the gore is solid. Anthony Perkins is fantastic, as always. And while the supporting cast may not be likable, they are very watchable. See more
Finn W Oct 25, 2017 Psycho III is the series' first installment to not have some form of mystery/twist (those who have viewed Psycho and Psycho II know what I'm talking about). Though a story doesn't need those things to be good, here the lack of such an element makes it seem something is missing. It should be mentioned that I don't consider the information we discover at the end (SPOILER: Emma Spool was Norman's aunt, not his mother) a twist because it merely reconfirms the status quo we had going into the second film. Anyway, that's not really my point here. My point is that with the lack of some form of mystery, this film becomes an-only-slightly better than typical 80s slasher flick. You don't care about any of Norman's victims like in Psycho I; they are clearly only here to be offed by him. As for the supporting characters, you can't really relate to their motivations and the actors portraying them are "meh" at best. I will say, though, that Anthony Perkins does give his best in his third go-around as Norman Bates, showing how invested he had become in the character. He also does a pretty capable job of directing; it's just a shame that this is the only film he would be at the helm. Additionally, though the story is fairly thin in many places, it does an interesting job of showing the psychological struggle Norman is going through at this time. That is probably the most (sadly, maybe only) interesting thing about the plot. Overall, the negatives and positives of Psycho III balance out, leading to an unremarkable film. "Unremarkable" isn't the worst thing to call a movie, but that's pretty awful for one with such an iconic character. See more
Harry S Sep 11, 2017 Perkins directs this one, and he does a decent job of it, but things are starting to wear pretty thin by this point. There's some interesting additions to the mythology by the end though... See more
Theodore R Jan 5, 2014 170416: Pure slasher silliness that leaves you hanging...again.
