What to Know

Critics Consensus

Infamous for its shower scene, but immortal for its contribution to the horror genre. Because Psycho was filmed with tact, grace, and art, Hitchcock didn't just create modern horror, he validated it.

The impeccable craft of Alfred Hitchcock is showcased even more effectively here, in the director’s take on a B-movie, than it is in many of his loftier projects. Go to Full Review

Not that [Marion] or we are guilty of the horrors [Norman] is, but this is a movie fundamentally about shame, of which guilt is an inextricable component. Go to Full Review

Psycho comes nearer to attaining an exhilarating balance between content and style than anything Hitchcock has done in years. Of course, it is a very minor work. But its virtues of tension, surprise, virtuosity and control are all major ones. Go to Full Review

Hitchcock's audacious masterpiece prefers to explore the recesses of the mind rather than the excesses of the flesh, and in doing so gives us one of the screen’s all-time great characters. Go to Full Review

Murder might have been rife in Hitchcock's earlier work, but the gutting sense of random mortality in 'Psycho' is as far as one can get from the semi-jocular bloodless deaths of 'Strangers on a Train' and 'The Trouble with Harry.' Go to Full Review

Poe M Apr 28, 2019 Psycho is more than just a film it's a work of art. Every second from the opening credits accompanied by the classic score until the very end with mother's monologue is filled with pure film magic. It tells an amazing story of a broken man with mommy issues while being one of the greatest films of all time. This film is perfect from beginning to end in every way possible. See more
Rey R Mar 25, 2019 I thought this movie was going to be really cheesy going into it (especially because of the twist), but I underestimated Alfred Hitchcock's power as a director. I can't really give all the credit to Hitchcock though, because the music was probably the greatest savior for the horror scenes. The music got me pretty damn scared, because I knew something bad was about to happen. This isn't the greatest movie ever, but it's interesting, and probably deserves it's rave. See more
Abraham R Mar 1, 2019 Psycho is a iconic thriller by Alfred Hitchcock. This movie is insanely good. Everything about it just feels creepy. If you haven't seen this trust me it's great. The moment you hear the screeching violins you feel immersed. See more
Hagrid W Feb 26, 2019 Loved it! Really suspensful. I can see why its a classic.
Han M Feb 25, 2019 Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" changed the thriller genre forever with his groundbreaking film about a murdering psychopath that includes one of cinema's most iconic scenes ("the shower scene") and remains a legendary piece of work by the Master of Suspense. See more
Ron S Jan 25, 2019 I enjoy this movie because I get to tell people it was made in black and white because the blood was chocolate sauce
