What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ridley Scott's ambitious quasi-prequel to Alien may not answer all of its big questions, but it's redeemed by its haunting visual grandeur and compelling performances -- particularly Michael Fassbender as a fastidious android.

Prometheus recaptures the essence of not only a beloved franchise, but also an admired yet complicated genre many filmmakers attempt but few successfully. In short, it shows the amateurs how it's really done. Go to Full Review

Even if the movie's logic ultimately spirals down into a vortex of hysteria, horror and hokum, I enjoyed the bulldozer intensity of the climax, which barely keeps a lid on the crackpot cult movie that's wrestling for the soul of this... blockbuster. Go to Full Review

With poise and great artistry, Scott crafts a world that combines high-tech science, primal beginnings, human frailty and sheer horror. Go to Full Review

Yeah, I love the film. It’s a big budget version of a stupid 80s alien-rip-off. That’s how I view it. It’s not canon, obviously. It’s a rip-off film like Galaxy of Terror but made by an immensely talented filmmaker (not storyteller). Go to Full Review

"Prometheus" is a modern, stylish, cerebral, and gorgeous exercise in science-fiction and terror that earns its place right along side Scott's films that defined both him and the genre Go to Full Review

Prometheus may not be a satisfying prequel, but it more than makes up for it by being a fascinating sci fi film to unpack. Go to Full Review

Theodore S Apr 1, 2019 Disappointing. An intriguing premise and a huge amount of money spent making this movie cannot make up for the hastily drawn characters and terrible script. A group of frat boys travels untold miles to another galaxy at the whim of a elderly millionaire without checking why first. Then the audience is asked to believe these boorish narcissists are actually elite scientists, who then immediately disregard basic scientific principles like 'don't take your helmet off in an environment full of unknown pathogens' and generally display such little respect for the eerie splendor surrounding them I was quite happy most of them died horribly. The only vaguely interesting character is the android played by Michael Fassbender, but his deliberate coldness makes him difficult to root for. I could have entirely done without Charlize Theron's character. Overall I can't believe this charmless slog was directed by Ridley Scott; it has as much atmosphere as a soap opera. See more
Hagrid S Mar 29, 2019 I like Michael Fassbender in this movie. He's a great character that's mysterious and he acts like an android should.
Hagrid R Mar 17, 2019 A tape that does not deserve all the hate it has received. I enjoyed it like the other movies in the franchise. It offers something new and too original that certain types of people do not appreciate. See more
Finn W Mar 17, 2019 Ambiguous to a fault. I recommend finding a fanedit that restores deleted scenes and improves the film.
Anakin L Mar 16, 2019 One of the most incoherent sci-fi movies ever
Abraham W Mar 13, 2019 one of my favorite movies. Makes you think.
