What to Know

Critics Consensus

A delightfully postmodern fairy tale, The Princess Bride is a deft, intelligent mix of swashbuckling, romance, and comedy that takes an age-old damsel-in-distress story and makes it fresh.

Just when the action threatens to get sappy, director Rob Reiner gives the film a modern-day twist. Go to Full Review

taking parodic elements, but retaining too much affection to parody, The Princess Bride has everything you could ask for in a movie. Go to Full Review

The film's strength begins with a deftly crafted script that does what many had believed was impossible: converting a book to film without losing anything in translation. Go to Full Review

Hagrid P Apr 28, 2019 I was always told that this was some sort of huge classic. Like, I was told it was phenomenal, and it was good, but I didn't really enjoy all the decisions from the characters. Like, I've heard snippets of dialogue from it everywhere and I knew there was the Indigo character who wanted to kill the guy who killed his dad but that didn't go how I thought it was gonna go at all! Like, it all seemed like such a forward thinking movie so I expected him to forgive the 6 Fingered Man or something. Like, even the protagonist didn't kill like the main bad guy! Revenge is just, such an ugly character type to have if you're not gonna have the character see how aggressive it is. And like, he was seen as a hero afterward! I don't know, something about his subplot just seemed off to meï¿ 1/2 the other elements of the movie absolutely held up, in my humble opinion. It was definitely worth watching for sure. See more
Apr 20, 2019 Great movie! A true family classic with the most quotable of quotes ever!
Leia M Apr 20, 2019 Some films try to do too many things at once and fail to do any of them properly, distractedly tripping on an extension cord and falling flat on their face. Princess Bride is a film which tries to do a lot of things and succeeds at all of them. The romance between Buttercup and Wheatley is genuinely effective - I wanted the two characters to end up together, unlike many movie romances where I don't care. The comedy is also effective, in large part thanks to the snappy dialogue - I don't amuse easily, and the scene where Vizzini is trying to guess which glass is poisoned legitimately made me laugh. As an adventure film, The Princess Bride is one of the best I've seen recently, with a fast pace and the occasional well-choreographed action scene such as the duel between Inigo Montoya and the Man in Black. The heroes are even more memorable than the action, with the snarky Wheatley, the honorable, revenge-obsessed swordsman Inigo Montoya, and the bumbling but well-meaning giant Fezzik. My only real criticism of the film is that Buttercup is sadly not as interesting as the other characters. On a final note, given that many adaptations are criticized for unfaithfulness, this film is as close as possible to the author's vision for an adaptation - William Goldman pushed for a film adaptation of his novel and wrote the film's screenplay himself. Ron M Apr 13, 2019 This movie has everything, a little something for everyone, adventure, fantasy, romance, and even MURDER(don't worry that SOB deserved it). First saw this as a child and even though my taste have changed on about everything, this movie stands up against the test of time and still sits proudly atop the heap as my favorite movie. See more
Finn W Apr 11, 2019 A movie I grew up with, watching it years later it really is just a fantastic well-rounded adventure film. The funny thing is noticing as an adult there are some elements that could be questionable, namely that the directing and music can be a bit basic and pedestrian, and there is an overall feeling of camp to a lot of it. I also never noticed before that the actual plot of the villain is a bit convoluted. But the thing is, none of that matters. In fact, it's almost part of the charm. The comedy works, the adventure works, the sense of fun just works. The camp is part of the charm, and all you need to know about the story is beat the bad guy and true love conquers all. It's a great introduction to adventure stories for kids with just a bit of edginess, and watching it years later it's just a damn entertaining movie. See more
