What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although the central romance arguably suffocates the heart of the drama, a moving performance by Nick Nolte and Barbra Streisand's deft direction give The Prince of Tides a soulful edge.

Graced with fine performances and commendably biting off more than it can ever hope to chew, The Prince Of Tides is a rare slice of romantic moviemaking for all those grown-ups feeling ignored since Kramer Vs. Kramer last rattled their value systems. Go to Full Review

The results may seem overripe and dated in spots, but she coaxes a fine performance out of Nolte, and the other actors (herself included) acquit themselves honorably. Go to Full Review

A deeply moving exploration of the tangled emotions of a dysfunctional Southern family, this lovingly crafted (though unevenly scripted) film of Pat Conroy's novel centers on Nick Nolte's performance of a lifetime. Go to Full Review

It's a big, old-fashioned romantic melodrama with some touching moments and strong bits of acting. Go to Full Review

This is Streisand’s movie, and Nolte’s Tom functions as both her subject and her muse. Go to Full Review

Despite its pitfalls, Barbara Streisand has enormous talent. But unconditionally adoring her film requires adoring her even more than she already does. And that is immeasurably impossible [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Hermione G Apr 17, 2019 Powerful story, beautiful music, Streisand's best work.
Theodore R Aug 17, 2018 Terribly contrived and insulting to victims of abuse.
Jul 20, 2018 I would have never watched this movie if it wasn't for my mum, who is the main reason I'm the movie enthusiast that I am today. And hell, I would have missed alot! The Prince of Tides is one of those 90s flicks that feels somehow aged, but has put enormous thought into its own story, making it relevant and timeless. The plot it one of those that cannot be spoiled, hence I'm not going to. But let me tell you that after some minor drama, some romance, and some 90s cringe, there's a huge revelation that will leave noone cold. Nick Nolte's performance is absolutely astonishing and Barbra Streisand (also director of this movies) does her part very well. What confused me at first was the fact that after solving the main conflict of the protagonist, the movie goes on for another thirty minutes, what turned out to be the right choice, because The Prince of Tides delivers an absolutely satisfying end that successfully manages to navigate through the cliffs of love movie clichés. Great! See more
Albus R Mar 7, 2018 Beautifully shot, with a strong performance by Nick Nolte, this might be Barbra Streisand's best picture as a director, as she takes the audience into the dark tale of a Southern family and a heartfelt love story and ending. Inspiring and moving. A must see. See more
Hagrid P Dec 16, 2017 A wonderful film. A personal alltime favorite.
Rey L Nov 8, 2017 Despite several sub-plots, the running length takes care of it all without rushing the overall plot. This is an example of good film, for sure, and when was the last time a drama like this was made? See more
