What to Know

Critics Consensus

A step back in the right direction for director David Gordon Green, Prince Avalanche shambles amiably along with a pair of artfully low-key performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

There's almost no plot and just two other minor characters but Prince Avalanche is a haunting, eccentric and ultimately touching little curio. Go to Full Review

This isn't a film; it's a one-act high-school play. Feel free to leave Prince Avalanche flailing in the wilderness. Go to Full Review

The journey taken by Alvin and Lance has few plot points, but the film is remarkably gripping and rich. Go to Full Review

Green proves that being both smug and dull are a lethal combination and results in a film that I, for one, couldn't wait to end. Go to Full Review

"Artful" and "low key" are the two adjectives being tossed around the most for Prince Avalanche and they fit the description. The trouble is "artful" and "low key" can be synonyms for "ponderous" and "boring." Go to Full Review

This is a huge step in the right direction for David Gordon Green who has dipped after his last few films, but Prince Avalanche is a pretty good film right out of the Richard Linklater playbook. Go to Full Review

Luke S Aug 21, 2013 After releasing a series of fairly big-budget studio comedies (I.E. Pineapple Express) director David Gordon Green returns to his indie roots with this low-key effort. A bro-mance and a two-actor show, Green gets some quirky performances from his two leads, and supplies them with smart dialogue too. He also shows that he still can make film's with a minimalist's eye, and we can be grateful that Prince Avalanche never ventures out of its forest setting. That said, the film is sloppier in other regards, as it seems that the tone can't decide whether it should be goofy or meditative, and I just can't help but feel that the score from Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo doesn't entirely work for a film with this this kind of an overt sense of humor. Flawed, but certainly worth the price of admission for those looking for solid arthouse territory. See more
