Critics Consensus

The final film by the great Robert Altman, A Prairie Home Companion, the big screen adaptation of Garrison Keillor's radio broadcast showcases plenty of the director's strengths: it's got a gigantic cast and plenty of quirky acting and dialogue.

It's a warm and dignified end to a sometimes erratic but often enthralling career. Go to Full Review

It's a lovely and loving film. Go to Full Review

The movie, redolent of death, is a sort of wake, but a funny-sad one, teeming with music, corny jokes, and an ensemble of gifted performers who appear to be having an obscene amount of fun in one another's company. Go to Full Review

Altman's best film since the one-two punch of The Player and Short Cuts back in the early 1990s. Go to Full Review

Altman conducts all of these disparate elements in a manner that simultaneously suggests both a practiced veteran and an eager newcomer. He calls upon all of his still-undiminished skills while staying agog with the possibilities to achieve. Go to Full Review

A Prairie Home Companion exudes a general warmth and foolishness, favors the chaos of a creative community, argues for some sort of elemental human and artistic solidarity and kindness-and aside from that, not much. Go to Full Review

Hermione G Jun 4, 2018 Weird, warm, worldly, and so very wonderfully Midwestern. From cast to camera, everything here is pitch perfect in its small, humble, human way. See more
Anakin R Aug 20, 2017 I had no idea what I was getting into with this odd yet cozy little portrayal of an American icon. I expected the dialogue to be smart, the characters to be memorable, the humor to be sharp, & the music to be wonderful, & that was all fulfilled. However, the almost nihilistic existentialism that pervades the surprising fantasy elements threw me for a loop; I can't decide if they were misguided overreaches or acutely genius. Either way, I loved this movie, & I think it will only benefit from multiple viewings. See more
Poe M Feb 23, 2017 When I lived in Minnesota, I never paid too much attention to Garrison Keillor out at Lake Wobegon and his Prairie Home Companion radio show. I watched this film primarily because it was directed by Robert Altman, his last film, and it certainly bears his stamp (overlapping dialogue, large cast, indirect focus, camera zoom, meandering non-plot). The material is genial enough (written by Keillor) and well-suited to Altman's style. The age-old radio show is going to be shut down and the Fitzgerald Theatre demolished - we watch the last performance front-stage and back-stage. There's some folksy country music (sung by the likes of Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, and John C. O'Reilly), some folksy stories and witticisms by Keillor, some informal friendly banter among old friends, and then some bits of plot thrown in to move the film along. Lindsay Lohan is here doing not much. Don't start here with Altman but he does elevate the totally non-offensive material here. There's a place for this way back yonder in your parents' day, I think. Theodore M Feb 7, 2016 The esoteric swan song of Robert Altman, "A Prairie Home Companion" is charming despite feeling like an imitation of the director's previous masterpieces, i.e. "Nashville" and "Short Cuts." See more
Poe W Apr 19, 2015 Robert Altman's final film seems like a good one to end off to this legendary filmmaker's career. With a huge cast, witty jokes and interesting characters, A Prarie Home Companion is a must-see, especially if your a Robert Altman fan. See more
Luke P Feb 13, 2012 Robert Altman's tribute to Garrison Keillor's longtime radio show. This is more of a faux-concert movie that utilizes the actual theater and band from the radio show. All of the actors played their own instruments and sang their own songs, generously sprinkling in performers from the real show. Better appreciated after doing some research into the source material. Great camera work that captures the performances nicely; Robert Altman's last film. See more
