An insurance agent (Déborah François) and his new secretary (Romain Duris) become locked in the grip of romance and competition as they train together for a speed-typing contest.

Critics Consensus

The cheerfully frothy Populaire may lack substance, but its visual appeal -- and director Roinsard's confident evocation of 1950s filmmaking tropes -- help carry the day.

It's neatly formatted, but if there's a message in the margins of this manuscript, "Populaire" doesn't spell it out.

As romantic comedy it's uneven, but as an ode to something long gone, "Populaire" hits the right notes.

Even when there's tragedy around the turn, it doesn't matter. Populaire plays like a musical - you expect anyone, at any time, to break into song.

It's just a wonder something so fleet-footed, impractically sunny, and self-confident can still be so intoxicating and winning.

Despite a painful lack of narrative originality, Populaire's peppy charm, game cast, and spectacular bubblegum imagery save the day and make it fun, at least.

Nothing quite goes according to plan in a film that is too long and needs a funnier script but is partially rescued by the screen charm of Duris and Franois.

If you've seen Secretary, you'll appreciate this French film about a man who (partially out of love and partially out of sportsmanship), pushes a clumsy young woman to become the fastest typist in the world, with all mental anguish it comes with, and a taste of a jetset lifestyle, It's a bit long though...

Light-hearted and with a much more French view of relationships than US or British rivals, but rather ends up overdoing its degree of jeopardy, making the happy resolution ever more implausible and out of character the longer the clock ticks down.

Buoyant homage to the 1950s heyday of the meet-cute romantic comedy, taking a wink to the more dated tropes without descending into the realm of satire, somehow managing to be both an ironic and unironic joy simultaneously.
