What to Know

Critics Consensus

While not Miyazaki's best film, Ponyo is a visually stunning fairy tale that's a sweetly poetic treat for children of all ages.

Miyazaki's back, and still a force of nature. A weird, wonderful aquatic romp, Ponyo is also a meditation on the state of this blue planet. Catch it. Go to Full Review

Ron S Sep 28, 2018 A young boy rescues a goldfish and a bond forms that allows the fish to turn into a young girl and come onto land in search of the boy. This sets off an imbalance that threatens both land and sea. In many ways, this is the oddest of Miyazaki's films with both the plot and the animation being a lot more impressionistic than his typical work. It's also more solidly aimed at children than his previous few films. Still, although it's not among his very best films, it's a beautifully animated film. See more
Anakin W Sep 14, 2018 The usual dosage of cute imagination, peculiar fantasy and sticky sweetness we've come to expect from a major Studio Ghibli picture. Set in a small port town, Ponyo is the tale of an independent young boy, effectively living in a single-parent household with his father continually at sea, who discovers an odd creature with shifting human features at the water's edge. In Hayao Miyazaki's hands, the ocean is a wild, vibrant collection of churning life, and its residents (particularly that one determined, shape-shifting fish) an irresistible, elemental force of passion and curiosity. It's alive and adorable, though not something to be taken lightly, as we discover when a raging storm hammers the coast and floods our little town. Generally quiet, low-key and contemplative, it's a much smaller journey than enveloping masterpieces like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Ghibli's earlier works are a better comparison, particularly My Neighbor Totoro which deals with many similar moods and themes in a forest environment. A small-scale, feel-good film that's an excellent opportunity to shut down the critical mind and give in to the sense of childish wonder that permeates Ghibli's best scenes, though not quite the sweeping epic that the studio's become known for of late.
