Critics Consensus

A coolly calculating psychological thriller that manages to scare the audience even if it is just using textbook thrills.

Eastwood displays a vigorous talent for sequences of violence and tension. He has obviously seen Psycho and Repulsion more than once, but those are excellent texts and he has learned his lessons passing well. Go to Full Review

For that 80% of the film which constitutes the story, the structure and dialog create a mood of nervous terror which the other 20% nearly blows away. Go to Full Review

Clint Eastwood wisely chose a strong, simple thriller for his first film as a director, and the project is remarkable in its self-effacing dedication to getting the craft right. Go to Full Review

While it’s hardly (Eastwood's) best directed film, you get good tastes of the filmmaker he would become all throughout “Misty”. Go to Full Review

Look, if you’re an up-and-coming actor directing a film for the first and possibly last time, why wouldn’t you devote 4.2% of the total running time to Donna Mills having sex with you under a waterfall? Go to Full Review

The sexual politics may be terribly dated, and its portrayal of mental illness typically inaccurate, but there is a solid, old-fashioned potboiler at work here. Go to Full Review

Leia G Mar 31, 2019 Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant! This film accurately depicts the behaviour of someone suffering from severe Borderline Personality Disorder (the fear of abandonment and rejection). This film is sort of ahead of its time considering that in the 1970's very little was known about mental illness such as BDP. This film is 100 times better than the "Fatal Attraction" crap which would go on to be released 16 years later. So if you want some insight into BDP, pick up this film and give it a watch, you won't regret it. See more
Hermione S Mar 13, 2019 A brief fling between a male disc jockey and an obsessed female fan takes a frightening, and perhaps even deadly turn when another woman enters the picture. I found this trivia interesting. Even though it touches on the early-'70s flashpoints of sexual liberation, studio execs expressed doubts about why anyone would want to see a movie featuring Eastwood as a deejay. Eastwood reportedly answered that he was not sure either, but he thought it was a good suspense story, and he offered his services as director for free. Play Misty for Me wound up making five times more than it cost and is a precursor to such erotic thrillers as Fatal Attraction (1987) and Basic Instinct (1992). Eastwood mentor Don Siegel appears early on as a bartender. In the role of the stalker is Jessica Walter who balances between crazed, malevolent psychopath and sweetheart bimbo with a creepy ease. Much of the credit must go to Jessica Walter for her outstanding performance . A highly enjoyable thriller. See more
Feb 2, 2019 The best thrilling movie ever made! With the best movie song ever sung (?): Misty!
Leia P Dec 2, 2018 Clint Eastwood, of all people, attempted to walk in Hitchcock's shoes for his maiden directorial effort, and the result is a beautifully photographed thriller that would later inspire the less effective, if more prominent, "Fatal Attraction" almost two decades later. Give Clint credit for not making a western his first time behind the camera, and for making one of the earliest and best music videos out of Roberta Flack's haunting ballad, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Also, praise the laconic star for making the film less a showcase for himself than for Jessica Walter who delivers an Oscar worthy performance as the homicidal Evelyn, whose stalking of mellow DJ Dave Garver begins when she repeatedly requests Errol Garner's "Misty" on Garver's late night radio show. Subtract a few points, however, for his having neglected to prune from Jo Heims's script the less than convincing dialogue given to Donna Mills. But add a few more in his favor for his willingness to play, even at that relatively early stage in his big screen career, such an unlikable leading man. (Awesome stalker movie in this Eastwood directorial debut). See more
Anakin R Sep 3, 2018 A decent thriller where Clint Eastwood finds himself with a psychotic stalker. Feels a little dated now, but it is unique for its time. (First and only viewing - 9/5/2018) See more
Hagrid S Feb 27, 2018 A very surprising and very good thriller from Eastwood, who also directs. This tables turned thriller is very well made and the usually macho Eastwood is well cast as the lead. See more
