A small creature feature with a pair of great lead performances from Mitchell and Diesel. The visual effects are dodgy at times, but the concept and Twohy's execution, as well as plus unexpected narrative subversions, make this an underrated classic.

The CGI's not that great and isn't exactly an adrenaline rush but the movie's premise is intriguing and this movie truly put Vin Diesel's name on the map a year before The Fast and The Furious. Riddick is just a creepy awesome character and in hindsight, it's amazing how much the movie's full of opposites (reference: a YouTube comment on CinemaSins' EWW video for Pitch Black). I can't say Pitch Black is the new Alien but it's entertaining enough for what it is.
