Critics Consensus

Phantom Thread's finely woven narrative is filled out nicely by humor, intoxicating romantic tension, and yet another impressively committed performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

A simple thing, a robe, and yet it captures so much of what it feels like to have passed so close to disaster... Go to Full Review

Anderson has trouble coaxing this struggle to any sort of emotional climax; its fanciful, symbolic ending is the sort critics will praise for its careful ambiguity even as they overlook its narrative desperation. Go to Full Review

Anderson makes movies that may refuse to explain themselves but nevertheless manage to engage the viewer, in part because he tends to cut from confined spaces to open ones as if inviting us to enter them. Go to Full Review

Combined with a score by Jonny Greenwood...breathtaking art direction, and masterful direction, "Phantom Thread" presents one of the most disturbing and corrosive love stories in contemporary cinema. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

A beautifully crafted, incredibly intentional film that doesn’t waste a single frame. The performances from Krieps and Day-Lewis will make you feel like you are watching a ceremonious dance performed by two highly seasoned veterans of the arts. Go to Full Review

Theodore M Apr 14, 2019 The tricky relationship barely masks the slow pace of the movie, but the direction and acting are very appreciated
Ron S Apr 10, 2019 With gorgeous production design that pays great attention to detail and a sure hand from PT Anderson who directs with an understated grace, 'Phantom Thread' is aesthetically pleasing and delivers a story that is all about the characters -- three of them, really -- who are all unique, strong personalities in their own way. Daniel Day-Lewis gives a truly outstanding performance of a selfish man-child who is oblivious to anything but his own needs, but Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville easily hold their own as (long) suffering women who must put up with him whilst also trying to find a way to understand and reform him for the better. Watching these characters interact with each other is interesting, tense, romantic, awkward and, ultimately, shocking. Now, for me, I feel that it's a little slow in places and it doesn't quite have the bite that some of PT Anderson's previous work has (perhaps that's because dressmaking isn't remotely exciting or interesting to me), but ultimately, it holds your attention with the strong necessity to find out how this bizarre love story is going to end. And what an ending it is. See more
Leia S Apr 6, 2019 Very cleverly layered film spaning decadent luxury to basic attraction. Telling a love story of gripping and unusual intensity.
George S Apr 6, 2019 It's almost exciting to see how luxurious and elegant Woodcock lived. Wow, that dress was ridiculously beautiful. Already I'm very intrigued with this character. You can tell he's a perfectionist and highly detailed oriented by the way he moves around the dress when the lady wears it for the first time. Ahh, the English countryside side. How I cherish it so. I wish to one day visit it. It seems so beautiful and quaint. That's very sweet how much he loves and cherishes his mother. Wow, that was such an interesting scene how when Cyril came out of nowhere upstairs in the working room and completely ruined the vibe. What Alma thought was going to be a romantic evening quickly turned into a professional workplace. It's almost painful to watch how uncomfortable she becomes. Almost like trying a dress on at a Macy's. It's interesting to see that Alma is self conscious about the way she looks, but to Woodcock, she has the perfect dimensions. Funny how even though she seems to have low self esteem, she's still pretty strong minded and willed and stands her ground. She seems to be inspiring him quite a bit and they seem to be falling closer for each other. It is pretty ridiculous how fussy he was during breakfast. I love how Cyril kind of taunts him that one morning, since Alma is in her good graces. Paul T. really knows how to pick the right actor/actresses to play a character based on their face or certain characteristics. Alma and Woodcock seem to be destined to be with each other. It's amazing to see all the hands on work that needed to be done to make one of those exquisite dresses. He needs to learn to be less cold and controlling and not let little things get to him. He needs to learn to let go of his ego and routine. That's so fucking crazy how the only way Alma can get Reynolds to be in a state vulnerability and caring, love is to poison him. You really get to see towards the end how dysfunctional and fucked up there relationship is and how they make it work. This will go down as one of those classic movies, but only to people who have taste and love movies and aren't dumb. This movie teaches us that there has to be a balance with everything. That you can't hide in your shell for too long because there will be people who will yank you out of it, who will remind you that it's ok to be vulnerable and forget about ego. Having an ego and trying to control everything gets you nowhere, at least when your in a relationship where you care about a person. The problem was his work was his life and his work was at home which controlled him. Being controlling and egotistical when it came to work, actually worked in his favor but when it came to relationships, it didn't work out. You can't shit where you eat and expect things to go well. Wonderful movie. See more
George W Apr 6, 2019 Paul Thomas Anderson delivers a visually stunning period piece about a renewed dressmaker filled with wit, romance, tension, and of course, an outstanding performance from Daniel Day-Lewis who continues to be a master of his craft. See more
Rey W Feb 25, 2019 I am a huge DDL fan and fairly big PTA fan. Punch Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood are absolute triumphs. But I have to admit, this movie failed on multiple levels for me. I do feel I know what they were going for, an intense love, that disturbs a genius as much as it empowers it. The wide spectrum of adoration and utter disdain. Not to mention the desire to suffer solely to engage the deep tenderness of caring. But it just fell flat to me. Far too often there was an attempt to saw everything with a look, a smile, and exaggerated understated action. I usually can appreciate that, but again here it just feels very flat. The passion that they attempted to display felt far more like overacting, despite very little engagement. I don't have any issue with the acting, as it was as good as could be and the ambiance was spot on, but never once did I care for the characters or what happened to them. I felt that I despised the two leads but did not want to see them suffer, nor did I care if they achieved new heights. I just didn't care at all, and that renders a character study a class not worth taking. I hope DDL does one more. See more
