Long-troubled by a catastrophic event for which he shares some of the blame, Soviet submarine Capt. Demi (Ed Harris), nevertheless, agrees to lead one final mission aboard the B-67, a vessel which is soon to be sold to the Chinese navy. Demi's compromised mental state leaves him ill-prepared to deal with the situation posed by a technician (David Duchovny) who -- acting on top-secret orders -- seizes control of the sub. His orders: Start World War III and shift the blame to the Chinese.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A cast of solid actors do what they can to elevate the material, but Phantom's script is too clunky and devoid of tension to bear comparison to its thematic predecessors.

Phantom features some wonky visual effects, but one either buys into a film of this kind or not. Go to Full Review

A game effort by a decent cast highlights the old-fashioned submarine thriller "Phantom," but heavy-handed dialogue, flurries of melodrama and a silly ending make the whole enterprise sink like a stone. Go to Full Review

When limited by budget, a good independent film turns in on itself and spotlights the actors, and that's where the meat is in this movie. Go to Full Review

Done well, submarine movies are intense affairs that keep viewers glued to the screen as characters play breathtaking games of cat-and-mouse. Done poorly, they turn out like Phantom. Go to Full Review

Abraham W Mar 26, 2019 Just a terrible movie, that I very much enjoyed when watched on a movie channel. The opening and ending were a mess for me (I won't bias you with my opinions) but the story in the middle was great. Once the movie got going the solid plot, fast pace, and quality actors swept me up and kept me entertained. It is set in the Cold War and has the tension of the time period. I would recommend it if you are nostalgic about submarine movies and war action, but can refrain from being critical of every detail. See more
Poe G Jan 17, 2019 tremendously underrated! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it
Draco M Jan 9, 2017 Soviet submarine captain, haunted by his past, who is forced to lead a covert mission that could spark a global nuclear war. The story left a lot of questions and the ending was not well thought through. See more
Ron S Jan 5, 2014 Solidly average. It had good moments and i like many of the actors, but the Americans playing Russians and predictable plot left a lot to be desired. See more
