It comes with its full quota of sex, conspiracy and violence, but the story is told in such circumspect fashion that next to nobody was offended. Go to Full Review

The greatness of American cinema resides not so much in its realism as in its aptitude for integrating that realism into the most varied styles or genres, setting them artistically free in the process. That is what's missing from Peyton Place. Go to Full Review

Dealing with some rough material and several interlaced plots, this closeup of small-town life still has taste, dramatic urgency and emotional warmth. Go to Full Review

Feb 2, 2019 The best movie score ever composed!
Ron L Aug 4, 2018 Dos puntos a favor la banda sonora y la producciòn ensoñadora y perfecta de un pueblo americano de los 50's.
Abraham R Dec 21, 2017 Given it's age it was better than I thought it would be. It must have taken guts to put a film on in 1957 about incest and other such unsavoury acts. It's still watered down a bit but I actually think it's a really good film. I think To Kill a Mockingbird is overrated and this film is underrated. See more
Hagrid M Aug 31, 2017 A star vehicle for Lana Turner that captured her in one of her most understated roles. She plays a dress shop owner who is trying to cope with the fact that her daughter will soon be leaving the nest after graduation and the deep dark secret she has kept from her all these years regarding her birth father. We not only see Turner's dilemma here but an entire town that presents a harmonious facade with an ugly underbelly of scandals that range from wrong side of the tracks relationships to incest to murder. Diane Varsi, in her film debut, portrays Constance's headstrong daughter and Hope Lange is a friend from the wrong side of said tracks. There's also Russ Tamblyn as Varsi's love interest, Lee Philips (in his film debut) as a principal and Turner's new suitor, Arthur Kennedy as an abusive alcoholic father, and Terry Moore as a "fast girl". The film pushed the envelope of the time but was nowhere near as scintillating as its source material. However, there is a great ensemble here. Turner has never been more adept at playing her character naturally and Varsi, Lange, and Tamblyn, the former two in their film debuts, seem like old pros in their graceful and believable performances as teens caught in the middle of a storm of scandal.
