What to Know

Critics Consensus

Peterloo proves writer-director Mike Leigh's populist anger remains undimmed - but that righteous fury occasionally overpowers the narrative.

It's talky, but a lot of the talk is quite interesting and passionate. It's sort of like being in a really good town hall meeting. Go to Full Review

There's an emotional distance to Peterloo that often makes it seem stagey. Go to Full Review

Still, it is a powerful, important part of anger-fueled history and is worth seeing. Go to Full Review

Leigh seems to have made this film as a cautionary tale, warning those in power not to repeat the mistakes of history. Whether this is the case or not, it was what I personally took away from the film, and I found the message very powerful. Go to Full Review

It's a masterfully made film, and a passionate statement from a humanist filmmaker that never resorts to drawing modern-day parallels; he does not need to, as the implications remain intractable. Go to Full Review

George L Apr 20, 2019 My husband chose this because he admires the cinematographer. I went with dubious expectations. After a few minutes, it looked like it was going to get violent, and that would be my cue to say, "See ya later," but it never really did, and then I got hooked. There's no real plot or human interest angle, no suspense, no characters to fall in love with, just a setting, A beautifully photographed setting that, together with the amazing horde of costumes (I don't think any two of the thousands of hats were alike), put you right in the middle of the situation as sort of a disinterested bystander. Even the journalist characters seemed disinterested: the massacre ended and they went home to write about it, with no sort of followup or in-depth reporting or analysis of what the outcome might mean going forward. In fact, they were a kind of metaphor for the movie itself, which had no denoument of any kind. I'm glad I saw it, but would I recommend it? History, costume, and cinematography buffs will eat it up. Your Grandma? Not so much. P.S.: The massacre becomes violent, of course, as massacres do, but you could fit the fake blood into a demitasse cup. See more
Kylo W Apr 13, 2019 While there's no doubting Mike Leigh is one of the great directors, his skill lies in intimate performance (see Naked) wherein rehearsal has been over many months and the actors roles defined around them. Epics are not his thing, Just as Benjamin Button wasn't Fincher's. While Peterloo looks amazing and is deftly handled, the actors are given lines which are little more than plugs for Leigh's view on the subject. It is also drab, downbeat and dour - but not in a way that helps the subject matter. He'll be back, hopefully with a smaller more intimate lens. See more
Anakin S Apr 11, 2019 Very cool, epic, and awesome. Over all I would say eterloo proves writer-director Mike Leigh's populist anger remains undimmed - but that righteous fury occasionally overpowers the narrative. See more
Poe R Apr 6, 2019 Movie night with Iris. Leigh's film is a long haul, and then doesn't really deliver the pay-off. I had no immediacy or sense of anger at the finale. As a bookend the Waterloo beginning is really useful. But then at the end, you're not told how many died, how it influenced the formation of the Guardian etc. See more
Draco W Apr 5, 2019 I was REALLY looking forward to this film but (unlike several audience members near me who left) then sat through an approx 2 hour build up to the massacre itself with no coverage of its aftermath. The experience was something akin to being trapped way too long in several rooms in a Living Museum. Too much polemic & not enough drama. See more
Harry W Nov 4, 2018 the story attempts to be interesting and drags an already long film out to 150 minutes. I don't think we needed this
