What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it doesn't delve deeply into the darkness of J.M. Barrie's tale, Peter Pan is a heartwarming, exuberant film with some great tunes.

In the 36 years of its existence, the movie has aged as little as Peter himself. It is still a lush, bright feature that happily clicks along with rollicking songs by Sammy Cahn, Sammy Fain and others. Go to Full Review

Hermione Feb 15, 2019 Out of all the animated Disney films released in the first 3 decades of the animated Disney films(Snow White 1937 to Jungle Book 1967), the one that I surprisingly like the least, though I still do like it, is Peter Pan. While it does have some great moments in it, there are some issues I have with it that hold it back from being a great film and instead, make it only a good film to me. My biggest issue is character roles between the main character and the villain. In all honesty, I don't think Captain Hook is a Disney villain. Here's the thing: Peter Pan had cut off Hook's hand as only for a joke in which he fed it to the crocodile to where it would be after Hook for the rest of his life. If Pan did that do me, I would want bloody revenge, too. It pains me to see Captain Hook lose in the end based on the backstory, I suppose the moral of the story is that don't try to get revenge on someone that cut off one of your body parts and fed it to a predator. It truly disturbed me. I also think one of the songs in the film is one of the weakest Disney songs to date: Following the Leader. While it is simple and fits in context, it just doesn't sound strong through the vocal performance and does tend to have some gibberish lyrics to it. There was also one thing that incredibly annoyed me about it: they didn't repeat the first lyric. They should have repeated the lyric "following the leader x4 whereever he will go" so that it would sound better and consistent as the rest of the song does repeat lyrics. WIth something like Colonel Hathi's March, while it is also a generic song, it does have strong and memorable vocal performances that really sell it as being catchy. Following the Leader doesn't, even though I do forgive the singers as they are only kids. I also find it odd that Tinkerbell was animated as, as Buddy Ebsen put it about Marc Davis's design of her, a "sexy pixie". While I'm not saying that the design is bad, there could have been a different and better way to design her. It was Walt's idea to make Peter Pan a boy, and while I thought that worked great and was a clever move, it does create some relationship tension between him and Wendy. For the film's tone, having that tension in the film doesn't make it gel as well. I also would have liked it if the dog had came to Neverland with them, there could have been an interesting use to the story put with the dog. Even the lost boys can be a bit annoying at times, but they do act like kids and are written like them. Besides all of that, the film still holds up strong because of the other songs I didn't mention that do sound great. The You Can Fly song is especially strong, I even find myself singing it at times to this day. I also love the What Makes the Red Man Red song as it has a very jazzy direction to it. I don't personally find the Indians to be offensive or racist, I just find them to be these kind of bad stereotypes(which may be another problem I have with the film). The greatest thing about the film are the characters of Captain Hook and Mr. Smee. Both are such strong characters with a lot of fun personality that works well together in the scenes where they interact with each other. The crocodile is also a very funny character, and he's drawn very comedically(as are the two I just mentioned). The slapstick and humor involving Hook and the crocodile are great fun to watch. I also love that Tinkerbell is a pantomime character with a lot of personality to her. I laughed at the scene where she's looking through the mirror and is measuring her hips. Strangely enough, the music that I enjoyed the music in the film was the instrumental music played when the crocodile was coming to the ship. That is such a catchy tick tock(which is also the crocodile's name) beat that I strangely admire a lot. While I don't think it's a great film, the elements in Peter Pan still hold up to where I still think it deserves to be called a classic, regardless of the annoyance it has to me. 3/4 See more

Hagrid S Jul 1, 2018 flies high only to fall flat.. Peter Pan 2 And A Half Out Of 5 Peter Pan is a Disney Animated feature that focuses on its protagonist that contrary to writers' belief, is uninteresting for the audience to invest in it. It derails quickly from its track into a scattered and shallow emotions that are neither impressive in its bits and pieces nor on the bigger picture. It is surprisingly short on technical aspects like songs and background score, although is rich on editing and cinematography along with its amazing animation which it never fails on delivering. The script ruptures its earlier acts in its latter ones on narrowing it down to a repetitive slog that seems overstretched for the commercial aspects as it clearly didn't have much to say with its characters especially not for around 80 minutes. The characters are undercooked and one dimensional and despite offering enough space to its side characters, the enthusiasm and passion is the missing puzzle that comes off as a major disappointment for the viewers as these are the key elements that usually defines the Disney Animation. The writing is weak and full of redundant sequences that are written to draw the laughs and its younger audience which may work but the vacancy of the poetic or metaphorical theme isn't something that can be replaced no matter how entertaining. Peter Pan flies high only to fall flat on its self-created bumpy path that it had previously too fumbled. See more
