Critics Consensus

Pet Sematary is a bruising horror flick that wears its quirks on its sleeves, to the detriment of its scare factor.

It's a wonderfully spooky premise, but King's sketch script, Lambert's ponderous direction and a lackluster cast don't make a strong case for it. Go to Full Review

Reduced to its plot outlines, King`s work no longer functions; its meaning lies in the obscure tensions and anxieties that shape the fantasy, not in what happens, but why. Go to Full Review

Overall, the acting in Pet Sematary is hit or miss. But when it hits, it's a bullseye. Go to Full Review

The film has equal parts dread, jump scares, and gore. All of which are very effective. The special effects are good, save for the fight with the Gage doll at the end of the film. Go to Full Review

Pet Sematary works as a fun horror movie (including a little icon) but also is ambitious in it's willingness to explore the inevitability of death and the necessity of working through grief Go to Full Review

Apr 24, 2019 Much better than the remake .. emotional and creepy
Han S Apr 23, 2019 MOVIE REVIEW: 7.2/10 "STEPHEN KING BRINGS OUR NIGHTMARES BACK FROM THE DEAD!" Full disclosure, we didn't see the 1989 original. After being big fans of It and Castle Rock, and not thinking they were as terrifying as we thought they would be, one of us convinced the other to see the remake of Pet Sematary. Still not sure who convinced who, but there we were watching through hands covering our faces and literally jumping out of our seats. The Creed family moves from Boston to Middle-of-Nowhere, Maine looking to slow things down. The plot, however, immediately picked up with their daughter Ellie finding the ï¿ 1/2~Pet Sematary' graveyard in their expansive backyard. It takes a tragic accident with their cat, Church, to discover the powers this ancient burial ground holds. We learn through Lithgow's heartbreaking portrayal of Jud that the Wendigo spirit is able to bring the dead back to life, though notably more aggressive than they were once before. It starts with the cat, but Stephen King knows no boundaries as Pet Sematary tests how far people will go for their family. This movie has all of the elements of a perfect horror movie; adorable children, an extremely rural house with that one slightly too friendly neighbor, and of course a cat. The jump scares got us in those moments right after there was a relief from the tension, and we'll admit they got us at least three separate times. Sure, the more you talk about the plot you can make it sound less creepy, but the haunting elements that Pet Sematary delivered will be sticking with us for a few days. "SOMETIMES NOT SEEING IS BETTER" See more
Apr 17, 2019 Insanely creepy, this is an old classic that genuinely works. There is no need for copious amounts of blood or jump scares, as they characters bring the horror about through their backstories and acting all on their own. See more
Anakin S Apr 16, 2019 I've got sensory overload on this one. Its blah. 3/5
Hermione S Apr 13, 2019 "Sometimes dead is better", especially when it should have remained on paper than being brought to life, unveiling how nonsensical it actually is while possibly parodying Stephen King's expectancy, admittedly except for couple distancing terrors. (C) See more
Poe P Apr 12, 2019 I did not enjoy the original Pet Sematary from it's bad acting to the effects and plot this movie bored me. What I liked about this movie was the acting by Fred Gwynne and how this movie plays with your emotions. Other than that I felt miserable throughout most of the movie and I felt that the 2019 remake was better. See more
