Anna and Will were each other's first: first kiss, first love and first and only relationship. Now, 10 years in, as Will is about to propose, the couple's best friend makes a drunken toast, suggesting that they should sleep around before their inevitable marriage. The joke lands like a lead balloon, but the thought lingers until Anna proposes that they try opening their relationship as a sexual experiment. Together, they venture out of the purely monogamous boundaries of their relationship.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Permission holds together in spite of its uneven narrative thanks to eminently watchable work from leads Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens.

Nearly every minute the camera is focused on her, [Rebecca] Hall wears a vague, faraway look of uncertainty, as though she is contemplating the past, present, and future all at once. Go to Full Review

A small story made with big performances from leads Stevens and Hall, and while it hasn't gotten the promotional push for audiences to pay attention, people lucky enough to stumble across it will fall for everyone involved. Go to Full Review

Draco L Mar 20, 2019 It was an interesting slow build movie about finding one's self when you hit 30 (or so). About being yourself on your own. About how one just doesnt stay the same since highschool and dreams and goals change. I especially liked the ending. See more
Hagrid L Mar 17, 2019 This movie at first felt like a weird version of a soft porn with expanded plot. Obviously this was due to it's bad pacing and struggling to establish immersion with the characters and their problems. But after a while it picked up with itself and became fun and entertaining to watch. The character's where amazing and very well acted, except for a few emotional scenes. The directing style was average at best. And the plot was overall decent at best, but the twists where good, and made it more unpredictable for the viewers. It somehow evaded the cliche tag, because of it's dramatic ending and the real message it delivered witch was really original and a first for most of the general audience. The complete lack of music was really bad and a missed opportunity for greater immersion and depth for the characters, and dramatic effect. Overall it was a good movie which had a really genuine plot and interesting events with a lot of interesting and entertaining elements that where done good, but it certainly could have been better if the directing style was more creative in some ways and the humor wasn't as awkward as it was. Anyway the message of the movie is a strong and real one which was treated with seriousness. See more
Hermione M Feb 12, 2019 Insipid tripe, Permission is yet another Hollywood assault on monogamy. The story follows a young couple that gives each other permission to have sex with other people in order to decide whether or not they truly want to be together. And it goes pretty much as one would suspect, as every other movie about couples giving a pass to their partners goes. There are some decent actors in the cast, Rebecca Hall, Gina Gershon, Jason Sudeikis, but there aren't any good performances. And the directing is weak as well; as there's nothing sensual or suspenseful about the affairs. Permission is an incredibly dull and formulaic movie that doesn't do anything new or interesting with this well wore material. See more
Theodore M Feb 9, 2019 This is abysmal storytelling and entry-level film-making. It is as relentless as a diatribe, and oh so dry and lifeless. A bad essay masquerading as drama. There is no life here, no characterization, it is all theme. From the first moments, the couple and their friends talk of nothing else but how they maybe should consider seeing others people before marrying. It is the same basic conversation over and over and over again for the first 30 minutes, when I snapped off. It makes me yearn for a grade-B Drew Barrymore rom-com, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write. I think the writer-director chose his stars not just because he couldn't afford A-listers, but because the audience member could so easily imagine cheating on people as dull, bland-looking, skinny and unsexy. as these two. I actually think it manages something difficult: making love, passion, lust and the sex in general seem, well... not worth the bother. See more
