As they embark on a trip across the American Southwest together, a surprising bond grows between the convict and his captive, even as law enforcement forces slowly catch up with them. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite some formulaic touches, Clint Eastwood's haunting, ambiguous crime drama is smart and gritty, and features a bravura performance from Kevin Costner as a prison escapee on the run.

Hancock's surface-skimming script is too formulaic for the job. There's enough material here for a crisp 90-minute entertainment. At 2+ hours, the leisurely, mildly engaging A Perfect World barely sputters across the finish line. Go to Full Review

Tells the tale of an escaped convict and his eight-year-old hostage and, in the process, considers the cycles of disappointment wrought on sons by questionable fathers: abusive ones, absent ones, even a well-meaning "daddy state." [Blu-ray] Go to Full Review

Rey W Dec 25, 2018 Great collaboration between Eastwood and heir apparent(It seemed so when the film released) to the western crown Kevin Costner. Eastwood's direction is, as usual crisp and the movie dives deep in the emotions of an escaped convict and his choices in life. Every shot is meticulously thought out, as Eastwood presents what some would say a Kubrick style film. The message of life through this dark movie slows the pacing at times, but is rewarded by Costner's acting. Kevin's films have been all but impressive over the last few years, but this performance stands out in my mind as his best. The ending is a tad bit off key with the rest of the film, but I understand why it was ended that way, it just could have been rewritten a few times. This is a good film to watch if you are looking for a heartfelt story. See more
George W Nov 14, 2018 Just watched again after more than 20 years. Still a masterpiece
Anakin S Sep 17, 2018 it is fair and exhilarating.. A Perfect World A Perfect World is a character driven drama about a guy who is on a run along with an abducted child with whom he grows an unbreakable affection. The father figured Costner and a disciple of his Lowther, has an amazing chemistry to feed off the audience easily in its long course. Distributed in long bold varied highly pitched emotional sequences the feature flows fluently where not only the verbal sparring but the silent pitches on screen too chills down the spine. Eastwood's world in here is surprisingly calm and fair than we usually get, it doesn't rely upon gunpowders and explosives but meaningful essential morale projected through Costner's ideology and fair deeds. The background score isn't extraordinary but well crafted along with stunning cinematography and fine editing. The live locations, mesmerizing visuals and neat road trips along with stunning camera worth that elevates the momentum. The narration is elaborative with strong and exquisite script that is perfectly balanced to offer the anticipated cinematic experience especially on such large scale. Costner oozes fair trial in his portrayal with bold nuances that you may get afraid with, adored with and be affected with instantly. Eastwood is supporting decently but fails to create the anticipated magic on screen althoughh Dern deliver unflinchingly as always. Armed with a gritty script by Hancock's whose details are off the hook, Eastwood offers these characters deserved and palpable surrounding where he might be weak on few sequences but never vulnerable. The gem-like sweet and sensible conversations between Costner and Lowther, layered screenplay that enfolds eye popping revelations and Costner at the heart of it who fuels this allegory are the high points of the picture. A Perfect World is accurately titled on terms of Costner's track as it is fair and exhilarating equally. See more

Albus S Jun 18, 2018 Another quality Clint Eastwood film. Road film with convict and child proves to be better than expected. Touching too.
Rey R May 28, 2018 This movie is a sleeper... Awesome direction by Clint Eastwood... And the best performance by Kevin Costner. I was always a fan but if you aren't, watch this and you will be! Slick and cool... Tough and soft around the edges! See more
