What to Know

Critics Consensus

George C. Scott's sympathetic, unflinching portrayal of the titular general in this sprawling epic is as definitive as any performance in the history of American biopics.

It could, of course, be a very smart liberal ploy to make Patton a monster-man among mice, but it backfires by turning him into a hero. Go to Full Review

Leia R Apr 9, 2019 The Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay winning effort "Patton" acts as a "warts and all" type of biopic, showcasing the subject's flaws, strengths, and idiosyncrasies in one complete, cinematic journey. And man, oh, man was George S. Patton a flawed, strong, and idiosyncratic person. If anything, "Patton" illustrates the very peculiar nature of a man like the general in question. Seeing someone so obsessed with all of the antiquated benefits of war (i.e. glory, exhilaration, and fulfillment in the face of death) honestly does make for a complicated watch. You as an audience member really do end up both pitying and disliking Patton in equal measure. And though I can't necessarily justify the overall length, it still is an unquestionably fascinating experience at times. See more
Harry P Dec 30, 2018 This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I've recently become quite a history fanatic, especially regarding World War 2. I'm not a big fan of the numbers, rather I like learning about the people. The real-life individuals who made this history. This film does precisely just that. It narrates the battles as they are plotted, planned and executed through the eyes of Patton. At the film's end, I wish I could have gone through the screen and asked him for an interview. Kudos to the actors for portraying this man's character so well. I've never admired a person more for their philosophy, it was blatantly clear that this was a man born and bred a soldier. I can't help but wonder how he would see our nation as it is today. Maybe he did go through reincarnation, if reincarnation exists, I hope that I'll get to meet him in one life. See more
Anakin W Dec 6, 2018 Patton a military genius and considered Hollywood accurately portrays one of the best WWII generals in the production of the movie Patton. It showed all of his significant achievement and correctly displayed the intensity that he explained to his soldiers. This also was one of his flaws he had a dirty mouth and a temper towards cowards. All men have flaws though, but only the strong ones know how to control and handle their mistakes. Patton showed this after he had his outrage on a soldier who was too scared to fight and had to apologize before being stripped of his campaign. One might argue that his flaws were still too large, and he never overcame that, but one must watch the movie and do some research to decide. Patton the movie focused on his military service and his campaigns in WWII. His tactics are sometimes questioned due to his firm and sometimes violent actions towards his troops. He also had a significant and dirty mouth and used profane language often; this is shown in the speech he delivered at the beginning of the movie. One might take his screaming and cursing as an offense, but others find it motivational and are sometimes a great tactic to rial up troops before and in battle. He might have had questionable methods, but his tactics are still studied by generals today. His passion for tanks was shown in his battle plans and the tank uniforms he wanted the army to use but got turned down. He finally got repaired when the military named the first new tank after the war M48 Patton. He was also believed very strongly in his religion and god. A part of the movie showed him praying for good weather tzo move his troops and fight the battle and the next day the conditions were perfect. This did not happen but was a way Hollywood could show interestingly to show his religious side. One might complain about the made-up seance, but it makes it a movie with entertainment, not just a boring documentary, so some events were made up to make the film more enjoyable. Weather Patton is a villain or a hero he would not care which as long as he could get there fist and beat Hitler and the Germans he would claim. This movie is for a very mature audience containing language and violence, but anyone who has a strong passion for history and WWII would enjoy the film, Patton. The movie is historically correct for most seance which can be rare in Hollywood, and it shows the extraordinary life of the 4-star general Patton. See more
Leia M Aug 31, 2018 This is in my opinion the one best historic film ever made. Instead of making a story out of history they made a film about history, This movie has no twist view on history instead it takes you throw it, with great acting and a man who looks just like patton. See more
George S Jul 4, 2018 I really didn't know much about this one coming into it, I had known of it and recognized the theme since it was the same one played in that classic Simpsons episode where Bart goes to war with Nelson Muntz. Great stuff here, a war movie that doesn't bore and has a decent amount of war action(though I thought it could have used more). George C. Scott is legendary in the lead role. I liked this. See more
Hermione S Jul 3, 2018 a self-challenged and self-motivated.. Patton 3 Out Of 5 Patton is a character driven feature that follows up its characters like an irrevocable command. The work that went behind writing just the protagonist clearly pays off, for it is the only thread that one wants to hold on to in this overstretched journey and boy what a thrilling ride it has to offer. It is rich on technical aspects like costume, production and art design, sound department, cinematography and editing. The camera work is stunning, it is shot beautifully with amazing locations and visuals that endorses the feature. The screenplay by Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H. North, is electrifying and smart if not gripping and the only reason to that would be the overlong runtime that it ticks for which seems inessential at certain points. Franklin J. Schaffner; the director, is in his A game and has done an excellent work on executing the feature which could have easily been blunt and disenchanting and the key to that would be the sense of urgency that is created to bind it all. The performance objective is scored majestically by the protagonist George C. Scott and Karl Malden in his supporting role. Patton is a self-challenged and self-motivated feature whose protagonist justifies its title like never before. See more
