When former CIA agent Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) hampers an IRA terrorist attack in London, he kills one of the terrorists. The dead man's brother, another member of the group named Sean Miller (Sean Bean), is arrested but quickly escapes. Vowing revenge against Ryan, Miller travels to the United States, where he forces Ryan's wife (Anne Archer) and daughter (Thora Birch) into a car accident that badly injures them. This convinces Ryan to rejoin the CIA in order to track down Miller.

Critics Consensus

Patriot Games doesn't win many points for verisimilitude, but some entertaining set pieces -- and Harrison Ford in the central role -- more than compensate for its flaws.

There are some issues with the film — it dumbed down Clancy’s book to such an extent that the author distanced himself from the production — but Ford is terrific.

There's not an ounce of plausibility to be found anywhere in the plot, or among its cast of characters, but it does have its moments. Australian director Phillip Noyce is a wild man with action scenes, and Ford remains [appealing].

In many ways expanding the legacy of the best James Bond films, Patriot Games combines intelligence, technology and a strong emotional thread, drawing audiences into a taut, action-packed thrill ride.

Patriot games is a film directed by Phillip Noyce. Very good acting especially Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. Very good characters like Jack Ryan and Sean Miller. Very good cinematography with some cool shots. Good settings from England to America. Good set design and props. Very good costume design that fits the characters. Steady style with the colour scheme. Very good practical effects. Very good action that is directed very well. Good and steady sound design. Very good dialogue. Good and steady editing. Really good background and front ground music. Very good revenge story. Good atmosphere especially when the Sean Miller is around. The film is also a little emotional. The film is also very enjoyable. Over all I give it a 7/10 - very good

Not your usual Tom Clancy thriller, but a thriller nonetheless. Scenes in London, Annapolis, the CIA's Langley headquarters, and the family's home on the coast keeps the action moving. A good story that will get your heart racing.

Good political thriller that still holds up very well, despite the outdated technology.
