Pale Rider

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Nearly a decade after The Outlaw Josey Wales, Clint Eastwood returns as a director to the genre that made his name with this elegant, spiritual Western that riffs on the classic Shane.

Though the metaphysical overtones of the screenplay are sometimes awkwardly handled and Eastwood's direction of actors (other than himself) is occasionally uncertain, this was one of the better American films of 1985. Go to Full Review

Pale Rider does nothing to disprove the wisdom that this genre is best left to the revival houses. A double feature of Shane and Eastwood's High Plains Drifter will do just fine, thanks. Go to Full Review

It's all been seen before, but Eastwood serves it up with authority, fine craftsmanship and a frequent sense of fun. Go to Full Review

The revenge formula is dependable, with obvious antagonists who require a special kind of cinematic justice. Go to Full Review

The very model of a polished, competent Western — one that showed Clint Eastwood could still scratch the itch so that, with "Unforgiven" seven years later, he could dig deep into the scab. Go to Full Review

Hagrid P Apr 8, 2019 Clint Eastwood and westerns are synonymous for more reasons than just the "Dollars" trilogy, of course. And from what I've heard in my travels, this 1985 effort is one of the chief reasons why. For some, "Pale Rider" may come off as trite or tired in its efforts to improve upon the western genre. But I think those individuals would be missing the point here. "Pale Rider" isn't looking to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it aims to take the more conventional aspects of the western genre and polish them up for the coming generation of filmgoers (at the time, that is). Do the cliches and tropes grow bothersome at times? Sure, but lacking in originality is far from the movie's crippling flaw. In fact, it's when this movie tries to be different that it sorely, sorely misses the mark, namely due to some unfortunate sub-plotting work on the part of the screenwriters. Overall though, yes, you could say the content in play is -- for the most part -- tried. But that's not to say it isn't also true. See more
Luke P Feb 24, 2019 Not one of Eastwood's best Westerns but still entertaining.
Feb 23, 2019 It might not be as good as some of his other westerns but Pale Rider still holds its own
Albus S Feb 20, 2019 Hmmmmmm. Apart form the arrogance of writing a 'hero' part with yourself in mind, this movie is very poorly done. Continuity is awful. Heavy snow, no snow? Freezing winds, not a breath to be seen? Sticks of dynamite that blow at different rates despite having the same length fuse. The make up department must have had a budget that meant they had to buy from joke shops. The final 'shoot out' is a farce. 'Crack' gun slingers just strolling around walking into 'traps'. I can only assume that folk are either easily pleased or feel the need to lavish praise because it's Eastwwod? See more
Feb 2, 2019 The best Western movie ever made!
Harry W Dec 19, 2018 Taken from a previous poster's opinion: Not as good as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly or the Outlaw Josey Wales. I would certainly rate this movie in the top 5 Clint Eastwood Westerns. The acting, dialog and plot are very good. I especially liked the Preacher's meeting with Stockburn and his deputies. It appears to me that the character of the Preacher may be the man with no name from High Plains Drifter. They are characters that suddenly appear, never state who they are or where they come from and help out in a crisis. They seem to be connected with someone who died violently prior to their arrival. They are made out to be avenging angels or demons. As further evidence of their being supernatural characters notice the bullet scars on the Preacher's back and Stockburn's wounds. In High Plains Drifter notice the flashbacks to the death of the sheriff. A definite must see for Eastwood fans. You won't be disappointed. See more
