Critics Consensus

A party movie that substitutes surfs for snow, Out Cold will leave viewers just that with its gross-out humor and sophomoric plot.

As if to justify a serious discussion of this comedy before dissing it, some reviewers have pointed out that it evokes Casablanca. Go to Full Review

Funnier than Woody Allen's last four movies, more exciting than Tarkovski's The Sacrifice, Out Cold will play best if your first legal beer is still far enough into the future to seem a vision of the promised land. Go to Full Review

The X-Games-style snowboard action is impressive and thrilling. There are some funny moments, such as when the same hapless dork is tricked into thinking he’s driving a truck about to careen off the road. But most of the humor is of the toilet variety. Go to Full Review

Although its main plot is a disposable low-rent ripoff and its leading players generally bland and undistinguished, there are some truly amusing supporting characters. Go to Full Review

Out Cold is basically Porky's in the snow, and it's a pale imitation at that. You can't go into this movie expecting anything innovative. Go to Full Review

Abraham G Jan 11, 2019 Out Cold is basically Casablanca in an Alaskan town. The movie has a solid 8% on Rotten Tomatoes, but they truly don't appreciate the comedy in the film. Yes, it's juvenile and sophomoric, however it's the first time we got to see Zach Galifinakis flex his comedic muscles, as well as Thomas Lennon playing a smarmy kiss ass. Lee Majors provides a solid villain, and every character is given something to do or has a memorable line. Perhaps it's just a nostalgia kick, but Out Cold was a film I watched as a 17 year old in 2001 and thought was a gut buster. It's also a film I watched with my brother and it's something we like to revisit together as memories of our youth. The movie isn't arthouse, but it's funny and has sweet characters who genuinely care for each other. You really get the sense that everyone in the film are friends and more than that, a family. Jan 2, 2019 Classic action sports comedy... and a funny zach galifinacAs.
Han M Nov 24, 2018 By far, one of my favorite snowboarding movies of all time. When I first watch the movie back in the early 2000s, I was amazed at how simple the comedy was, a kind of hybrid of stoner, slapstick with very little of the bad pineapple express tropes. What was surprising to me even today is the all the homages it makes to a very famous movie from the golden years Casablanca. From rick's "in all the bars in all of Alaska" quote; to the ending, it shows great respect to Casablanca. The love i have for this movie continues today as I watch in every winter which inspires met to get on the slopes with my buddies, drink a beer and play "king of the hill." Fun movie despite what the critics say. GO WATCH IT! See more
