Unlike their heroic counterparts on the force, desk-bound NYPD detectives Gamble and Hoitz garner no headlines as they work day to day. Gamble relishes his job as a paper pusher, but Hoitz is itching to get back on the street and make a name for himself. When a seemingly minor case turns out to be a big deal, the two cops get the opportunity to finally prove to their comrades that they have the right stuff.

Critics Consensus

A clever parody of cop-buddy action-comedies, The Other Guys delivers several impressive action set pieces and lots of big laughs, thanks to the assured comic chemistry between Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

This is the fourth feature that Will Ferrell and writer-director Adam McKay have collaborated on, and once again they deliver laugh-out-loud if ultimately disposable comedy with mixed messages about arrested male development.

At least McKay makes the film visually interesting, with one or two scenes of action that are worthy of mention, and some flair behind the camera during a frozen bar scene.

It's a strangely sobering end to a seriously funny film, but also a hint at what McKay would tackle later in the decade with the Oscar-winning The Big Short.

The movie isn't bad per se, but unfocused would be the corresponding adjective. [Full review in Spanish]

Came across this again on tv and felt i have to say how much do mark wahlberg and michael keaton stick out like a sore thumb in this movie. Way to big for this movie, their acting skills dwarf the surrounding cast.

This is one of my favorite Will Ferrell movies, he and Mark Wahlberg work so well together in this film and there are truly some hilarious moments. The plot is obviously pretty flimsy so don't expect this movie to truly blow you away as far as the story goes, but it is a lot of fun. One of those movies that I'll watch anytime it's on but won't actively seek it out.

NO IDEA why Americans - or anyone for that matter - think that a lot of bullying or abuse and a lot of shouting is funny, or even amusing. The other guys starts off well enough with a crazy over-the-top carchase and action sequence by Samuel Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. If they had been the main protagonists, perhaps the whole movie would have been fun. Then alas, enter Ferrell and Wahlberg with no visible chemistry and a lot of wining. If the critics consesus is that the two have a lot of comic chemistry between them, perhaps the critics were wearing the wrong glasses and bad headphones. Or they have not watched past the first ten minutes.. Much too late in the movie Wahlberg and Ferrell come into their own. By then the damage is already done. Poor delivery, also by Wahlberg when wining to his girlfried whom he is chasing around. The scenario as such is good enough for laughs and to keep us interested. Pity, perhaps with better direction and better delivery (less wining, more subtlety, power and fun) something could have come out of it. I have seen Wahlberg in much better roles, in this movie . Also Micheal Keaton, great in so many movies, is wasted here. The 'Sir David' character is actually more entertaining then the others together. To make a real funny movie, I recommend the makers to watch more English comedy.

The Other Guys has some storyline flaws, but Will Ferrel and Mark Whalberg have wonderful comedic chemistry, making the film an over-the-top, reasonably funny buddy-cop action comedy that easily tramples many in the genre.
