What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Opera house location gives plenty to work with for director Dario Argento, who hits his decadently bloody high notes here.

Opera is always heading backwards to move forwards, and ends, bizarrely, with its heroine crawling in joyous derangement amidst the primordial plants and critters of the natural world, in an ultimate act of atavism. Go to Full Review

The music's beautiful and specially paired with the beautiful cinematography in this film... I can't really say a lot for the acting unfortunately. Go to Full Review

In a career full of nutty, brutal, style-forward horror films, few titles on Dario Argento's resume are as strange, violent, or aesthetically singular as "Opera." Go to Full Review

Opera sees giallo master Dario Argento working at his most gloriously OTT and this 1987 mystery contains all the traits you would expect from the Italian director: mystery, lust, violence and impressive camera work. Go to Full Review

Anakin M Mar 26, 2018 I wanted to like this movie more than I did. I think a lot of the experience was tainted by the fact that I was unable to find a copy in its original Italian language. The dubbed English version I watched was awkward and nonsensical. However, I did enjoy the story. The mystery, the inclusion of the crows into the plot and the backdrop of the film was original and enjoyable. However, it had so many plot holes. Too many. And it dragged. It was probably one of my least favourite Argento films. See more
Rey W Oct 2, 2017 A must see for Horror Fans an electric & absorbing Horror about a young girl who is the understudy of an opera who finds herself in the lead. After her first performance she is tied up after the show and forced (he eyes forced open with metal spikes attached to her brows) to witness a murder. The killer continues his spree but only does it when the young girl is present. Gory & wild this film isn't for the faint hearted. Quite a rare film with only a few copies available worldwide. Kylo R Feb 18, 2017 Stylish, gripping and unpredictable, Opera is more an exercise in artistic expression than it is an accomplished film. The story fumbles a bit near the end, but it's a fun ride while it lasts. See more
Harry L Feb 7, 2017 4 star for the beautiful directing work, rich style, pro editing, some surreal sequences, good story and suspense but i have to mention, even though i wont let impact my rating, that his views on women remains contemptible; even though he tries to be a bit less bad than previously by giving the leading lady the last word on the question, the road to get there continues to display so much contempt that is hard to separate from him.
