Columbus... enhances the comedic bits with commentary on the human condition: the emergence of male-female love; the silver cord between mother and son; the plight of aging single men whose only ties are their pub companions. Go to Full Review

It’s not peak Candy, Hughes, or Columbus, but the cast is clearly doing their best to elevate the material. Go to Full Review

A pretty easy ride, almost entirely because of John Candy and the miraculous casting of Maureen O'Hara. Go to Full Review

Orchestrates a peaceful stream of gags and one-liners while piecing together a puzzle of broken hearts...one of Columbus's best films, and easily ranks as Candy's most dimensional performance. He's a joy to watch here. Go to Full Review

Anakin S Jan 30, 2018 John Candy was a true talent.; guy that could really make you feel. This movie shows that while most people think of him as a funny/ kinda goofy guy, he is much more of a heart grabber, and dramatic actor than he gets credit for. This movie is disguised as a comedy, but in reality plays out more like a drama with real life heart break, tension, stress, jealousy, anger, regret and so much more it really breaks any feel good vibe that you might have had when you sat down. It is almost a tragedy in its sort of desperate dreary romance and cynical nature. Still the movie should be admired for its true to life conflict and modern day dilemas. It is definitely a thoughtful piece. However the characters, especially the love interest needed to be detailed more in the writing , as she really doesn't have much to her. Despite that Ally Sheedy gives a strong performance reminiscent of the dynamic personality she brought to the Breakfast Club. This is not a very favorable movie because it either hits a little too close to home for some people or strikes a nerve a bit too hard. Touchy subjects like this require a lot of emotional investment that you might not be ready for when you pick up a John Candy flick. It is not so bad that it will leave you upset but it does make you wish for something sweeter or softer. If heavy drama is your thing, this doesn't quite cut it either. A lot of this film is supposed to be tongue in cheek but lingers on depressing. Further illustrating this problem is that the lead characters do not show much love towards each other. The romance and chemistry just isn't convincing. Ally Sheedy and John Candy just didnt click and make that spark for the audience to truly believe they are a couple. So like i said the film leaves you wanting more and left with an unfulfilled romantic inclination. It's sweet but unfortunately bittersweet. See more
Luke P Apr 24, 2017 Excellent old-fashioned romantic comedy.
Hermione S Mar 28, 2017 A refreshingly romantic comedy from John Candy as a friendly cop but all too single for too long guy. Not without a woman however he is dating for 8 years a woman he works for in a tire shop. He stumbles upon a morticians daughter who works on dead clients cosmetic appearance hoping to make it big in show biz or some other uplifting profession. Exceedingly shy she and Candy hook up for the usual romance save for his living with his mother way too long in his bachelor life. Torn between his widowed mother and this new love in his life he trys to satisfy both but the mother is so dominant he dare not offend her. Maureen O'Hara makes a great Irish mother. Would be interesting to know how she got cast in the film. Not the usual Uncle Buck character Candy is still great in a semi comedic role. I liked this film and it held my attention almost to the end. His favorite saying is being a cop has benefits and more than once you will see evidence of that. Not hilarious but has its moments. Hermione G Feb 19, 2017 John Candy stars in Christopher Columbus' Only the Lonely. John Candy is Danny Muldoon, a lonely bachelor that lives with his mother. He comes across another lonely in Theresa (Ally Sheedy) who does make up for the dead at funeral homes. The two despite an awkward first date, hit it off and continue dating. The biggest obstacle in their relationship is his strict mother Rose (Maureen O'Hara). She is old fashioned, hates pollacks and Sicilians and tells it like it is. She wants Danny to only be with a young Irish girl. She does not even let Theresa stay at their place past 11:35. Theresa hates that she Danny doesn't fight for her and take her side. Despite all of this they get engaged, but she knows that Danny still lets his mother run his life. It becomes up to Danny to get his priorities straight and let him run his own life. Only the Lonely is decent romantic comedy. There are probably many who can relate to the problems of the mother meeting the new love of their life and the problems that can occur. Somehow despite this they manage to get engaged after just a few dates, and a fight, and this does not seem too realistic. For some reason, Columbus is convinced that many of the dream sequences Candy has of the demise of his mother is quite funny. The movie really is not too funny and although Candy is charming and a good lead, all of his talents seem to be underutilized. Despite the comedy not being great, the film has a decent insight to some of the complications and problems that can arise with relationships. -2.19.2017 See more
