Critics Consensus

Once Upon a Deadpool retains enough of the franchise's anarchic spirit to entertain, but doesn't add enough to Deadpool 2 to justify its own existence.

It's a sick, dumb joke that you can't help but laugh at. And as soon as you do, you feel bad about falling for the gag. Go to Full Review

Once Upon a Deadpool is not a wholly satisfying experience, but it adds a little more heart to a film that already had more than you'd expect. Go to Full Review

Draco M Apr 27, 2019 This is a sort of strange one to review. Once Upon A Deadpool is a PG-13 remake of Deadpool 2 (2018). It's removed a lot of the gore from the original film, the cursing is toned down quite a bit and they've inserted some new footage with Fred Savage playing himself. The story is that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) has kidnapped Fred and is retelling him the story of Deadpool 2. Sort of reminiscent of Fred's previous role in the film The Princess Bride (1987). Anyways this is the same movie for the most part of Deadpool 2, so I am not going to recount that. The movie still has a good pace to it and I will say the Fred Savage parts in this movie are quite hilarious. If Deadpool 2 had never come out and we never knew the potential of this movie this would have been a decent movie. I'm not quite sure why this was released. Are they trying to test a tone downed Deadpool for the new Disney crowd? Not sute and for the most part it was entertaining, but not a must watch. I would say at the very least it's worth a rental to see what it's about, but the movie just feels better with its Rated R version (the preferable version to watch). See more
Mar 30, 2019 Hilarious! Watched it with my 11 yr old who has been dying to see Deadpool. This was perfect. Now he can't wait to see the real thing. And we loved the Dan Savage cameo. See more
Poe W Mar 28, 2019 It's still Deadpool, it's still funny, it's still good enough, but it's not different enough to be worth it. As a novelty, it's notable enough, and the additional footage with Fred Savage is funny. I do like how Savage even comments on some of the criticisms of the movie, like the fridging of Vanessa or Cable's lack of complexity compared to the comics. However I'm not really sure who this movie's supposed to be for. It comments on the original take on Deadpool 2 in some funny ways, but it doesn't have the bite of Deadpool 2 which makes it a charming novelty but ultimately pointless. It could be for families I guess, but then they're going to miss the references to the original version, and then it takes away some of the elements of the original that it doesn't need to. There are some great scenes that get shortened or cut out entirely that didn't need to. Sometimes there's a dramatic moment that's undercut by an insert from Fred Savage, which is funny if you've seen the original, but kind of ruins the moment. This is really a weird idea overall. I mean, it's still Deadpool, there's stuff in it that still works because the original worked, but ultimately this take on it is kind of a failed experiment. See more
