Critics Consensus

Though it has a mean streak, and does not cater to all tastes, Observe and Report has gut-busting laughs and a fully committed Seth Rogen in irresistible form.

More than once, writer-director Jody Hill teases out the slippy, gray area between a subversive gross-out gag and something unsettlingly misogynist. He wants to push buttons, and he's talented enough to get away with it. Go to Full Review

Much of the movie is just plain vicious. At best, it's sad and grotesque, rather than hilarious. Go to Full Review

Leia W Apr 8, 2019 I remember truly despising this movie when it came out back in 2009. As it's aged, though, it seems to have become something of a cult film, which lead me to believe that maybe I dismissed it outright for not being a Seth Rogen style comedy that one might have expected at the time, so I gave it a rewatch. And let me tell you something. I still straight up hate this movie. I have NO idea why it gives Ronnie so many wins in such a ridiculous way. After being fired for fighting off and injuring a dozen cops with a night stick, he is immediately rewarded with his job back after shooting a flasher / attempted rapist in plain sight of hundreds of shoppers, only to then loudly curse out a woman he himself has harassed throughout the film. Garbage. Absolute dog shit. See more
Rey R Apr 5, 2019 3/5. It has plenty of funny moments, but doesn't come close to living up to its potential.
Anakin W Apr 4, 2019 The film is amusing enough for it's short running time. It's not quite as funny as it thinks or as amusing as it could have been. But once you accept that the film exists in a world slightly out of phase with normal human behavior, it has some pretty good chuckles. The movie is a little mean spirited at times, but means well. Ronnie isn't really a likable character (despite being played by the charming Seth Rogan) but I didn't hate him. I felt sad for him. The biggest surprise is that he's not a bad guy, not quite a good guy, but a complex character. Even when the film gets absurd, at least we can imagine that within the world of the film, he's doing exactly what one would expect from him. See more
Apr 3, 2019 Really boring. Not funny.
Harry S Jan 24, 2019 Jodi Hill presents a very familiar comedy movie that's just a bit off-beat and intensely dark at times while keeping a happy veneer over it all. The characters are insane even for something of Jodi Hills and it can be really fun. Rogen potrays an often unlikable but understandable mall cop. It's admirable for Rogen to shy away from his nice guy persona and play a character a bit mean hearted more akin to his roles like in Freaks and Geeks. Theres a fair amount of big names and Jody Hill usuals and they do an excellent job here. No one is a weak link and Anna Farris has her best performance here. Hill has a knack at finding the right song for the right time and it comes to play here. Unfortunately the comedy isn't consistent, and with the attempt to mesh dark comedy and mainstream appeal some jokes come up awkward but not funny. Dark comedy is bliss but bad dark comedy is hell and there's a bit of that. Obviously the good outshines the bad with this easily becoming a cult classic in the future when generations eventually binge Rogens work. Extremely off-putting to most, dark comedy fans should get a kick out of this. Jodi Hill manages to make a film full of dark humor yet avoid all the cynicism making this much more palatable for the general audience. See more
Harry L Dec 5, 2018 Some very funny parts. Pena has some shinning moments.
