Critics Consensus

Though sometimes melodramatic and formulaic, North Country is nonetheless a rousing, powerful story of courage and humanity.

Charlize Theron, in nonglam mode, dominates this powerful drama about sexual harassment at a Minnesota iron mine in the early 90s. Go to Full Review

Frances McDormand, as the lone female union rep, and Richard Jenkins, as Josie's angry miner dad, cut through the predictability. Go to Full Review

Yet Theron's steady performance allows you to see something in Josey that baulks at her victim status. Go to Full Review

Theron as usual is spot on, even if the drama feels a bit watered down. Go to Full Review

It was probably ordained from the beginning that the ending of North Country would be pure schmaltz, but isn't that what you sign up for when you buy your ticket to a movie like this? Theron and Caro deliver the goods. Go to Full Review

Anakin W Jan 3, 2019 Just blew me off ! Though it's fictitious and dramatized to make spice to the true events, it's impeccable.
Harry L Aug 30, 2018 Watch this if: You're passionate about women's rights and the personal journeys that bring about social justice. Inspired by the story of Lois Jenson, a woman mine worker who filed the first class-action sexual harassment lawsuit in the U.S., North Country is a moving depiction of struggle and courage in the face of impossible odds. Charlize Theron is phenomenal as lead character Josey, while Frances McDormand is brilliant as her no-nonsense friend and fellow worker. To top off this badass woman crew, the movie is directed by Niki Caro of Whale Rider fame. This movie is painful, but it's a must-see. Muser tip: Next up for Caro is a live-action version of Mulan. Heroines unite! See more
Albus S Jan 27, 2018 Heart-breaking and emotional story of courage.
Luke R Oct 29, 2017 Sean Bean survived this movie!
Hermione S Jan 4, 2016 Holy shit, Sean Bean survived.
Harry G Oct 31, 2007 "North Country" is one of those movies that come along about once every year that stirs your mind and evokes all kinds of emotions from within you. I am not a woman, but to see the bravery and determination of the women of the Mesabi Iron Range is so empowering and inspiration (for anyone) that I wanted to stand up and cheer at the end. Charlize Theron returns to the screen after her triumph in Patty Jenkis's "Monster" as Josey Aimes, the heroine of the movie. Theron who could limit herself to films that show off her beautiful features and model physique has choses a better route playing women that are emotionally driven and headstrong. The supporting cast, which includes fellow Oscar winners Frances McDormand and Sissy Spacek, as well as other screen veterens like Woody Harrelson, Sean Bean, and Richard Jenkins are also wonderful in their roles.
