What to Know

Critics Consensus

A neo-noir that favors rich psychological depth and mood over suspense, Night Moves is elevated by Arthur Penn's introspective direction and Gene Hackman's brooding performance.

Leia R Feb 6, 2019 I do not share the delight expressed in the reviews of here critics. Hackman's acting is as usually good, but altogether the film does not reach the quality of a good detective or suspense. And i wonder why nobody has dropped a word about young Melanie Griffith, naked there... See more
Harry W Nov 25, 2018 Already loving the groovy music and the raw look to the movie. That is one nice Mustang. Those old 60's early 70's Mustangs are beautiful. That slut of a wife. How dare she in that ridiculous mullet. Now he has two things to worry about. Things get interesting when he goes and visits the Keys in Florida. The interactions an dialogue between the characters gets interesting. That chick has some tasty breasts, my god. Can you imagine going for a swim at night in the ocean and finding a wrecked plane with the driver still in the seat? That'd be something to freak out about. The parts shot in the Keys were well done. Kind of reminds me of parts from Jaws. This movie knows the importance and understands how vital breasts are. Just when you think everything is fine and peachy, things start turning around and we start figuring out the truth and what really happened. It's crazy how many people were involved in the whole operation and how they tried to cover up certain things. But in the end he prevailed and was able to crack the case even though everyone died. Good movie. See more
Ron R Nov 14, 2018 Somewhat disposable detective mystery set in California, Arizona, and the Florida Keys.
Albus P Oct 3, 2018 Private investigator Harry Moseby is hired by a client to find her runaway teenage daughter. Moseby tracks the daughter down, but the quest has just begun. There are more strings to pull and more boxes to open. Gene Hackman as Harry is in big shape here, supported by other solid, yet rather unknown names. The story is pretty good, it got some subplots that works out fine and it looks pretty good. Noir-ish at best, flat at it's worst, but overall it's an entertaining film. Solid direction, neat twists and a remeberable ending makes sure this film is more than a superb Gene Hackman. 7 out of 10 seaplanes. See more
Han M Jan 30, 2018 By the mid 1970's film noire was enjoying something of a resurgence and this is a fine example of why. Gene Hackman, in yet another remarkable acting performance, is lost in a bad marriage to a philandering wife, mired in a miserable existence as a failed pro football player. He takes a job searching for the missing daughter (played impeccably well by Melanie Griffith in her debut) of a faded Hollywood actress to try and escape his predicament. Dark steamy nights in the Florida everglades, long tedious days in Los Angeles sparking wanderlust. No other film has ever captured the sheer sensation of inner panic at the realization of how easily any of us can get lost in this crazy world and the ensuing darkness that accompanies the acceptance of the possibility that maybe nobody is even looking for us. Leia G Oct 4, 2017 Superb film-noir from the 70's with impeccably shot steamy night Florida scenes. It has an old-fashioned premise and old-fashioned feel but also frankness of the 70's. The plot is satisfyingly complex and intricate and, like a great noir should do, it leaves some important answers open to a debate to contemplate about afterwards. Fine character study and thin philosophical undertone add to the weigh of the movie. Gene Hackman in the role of private eye is brilliant. While he loves his woman he also loves his job thus his marriage suffers because of it. Not to forget the moody soundtrack and young James Woods and Melanie Griffith in supporting roles. See more
