What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Next Karate Kid is noteworthy for giving audiences the chance to see a pre-Oscars Hilary Swank, but other than a typically solid performance from Pat Morita, this unnecessary fourth installment in the franchise has very little to offer.

Swank is a fresh, energetic, charismatic actress. She radiates the kind of wholesome goodness and innocence that made Ralph Macchio so believable as the original karate Kid. Go to Full Review

Draco S Mar 11, 2019 The sequel that never should have been made. It has a weak story and weak performance from Hillary Swank. It did nothing for the story nor the legacy of karate kid the films should have ended after Daniel beat Mike Barnes. Skip this and watch Cobra Kai after 3 See more
Poe L Jan 12, 2019 I liked it, even if the enemies were too demonized, I think it still contains some good lessons.
Han M Jul 4, 2018 The Karate Kid has seared itself into public consciousness by now- It has been playing for decades on every cable channel, everywhere around the world. A bullied teen seeks refuge under a martial arts artist and we see their relationship grow as he teaches him how to fight back. The bond between the master and the student is genuinely exciting and both Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio are fantastic in their respective identities. This is one of the most fondly remembered high school movies and the reason is because it works well on every level- direction, acting, pacing, emotional content. Watch this asap.(A must watch 80s high school movie) See more
Hermione W Jun 12, 2018 piece of shit this movie should not have been made the karate kid saga was perfect every movie was great than this peice of shit came along and messed it up i mean where do i even begin See more
Finn S May 30, 2018 NO. If you want a Karate Kid reboot, Go see the 2010 film.
Poe R May 28, 2018 My mind knows this is a pretty stupid film and a needless spin off that nobody asked for. But having grown up watching this as a toddler in the 90's as well as the far superior Macchio predecessors, my heart knows there are some aspects in this that I somewhat enjoy. Miyagi is still charming as ever, Hilary Swank gives a solid performance even though her character is a forced b-word for the first 20 minutes of the film, I enjoy the cheesiness of antagonists Ned and Dugan, and at least this film retains the epic and soothing original score by Bill Conti. That being said, the dialogue is amateur and seemingly written by a middle schooler at parts. For example: "She was killed in an accident and their both dead", really? So like, if a person is shot, you mean there's a bullet inside them? Or if you freeze to death, were you cold during the process? Talk about redundancy. Anyways, that's a minor pet peeve here. There's also scenes that leave you scratching your head and asking "why?". For example, in this franchise, we've went from iconic moments like the crane kick, to monks dancing to The Cranberries here. From Miyagi beating up bullies dressed in skeletal Halloween costumes, to Miyagi bowling with his monk friends here. Talk about taking an iconic character and going over-the-top comedic with him. Also, what's the deal with Julie's love interest Eric? He seems like a cool guy who's confident and good-hearted, yet he gets his ass kicked at every turn in this film. Is he related to the Daniel Larusso from Part 3? And even though I like Ned and Dugan's ridiculous characters and motovations, the fact is they are just that: ridiculous. You mean to tell me Ironside plays a drill sergeant teaching high school kids military tactics to learn how to be trained killers...riiight. Okay. Oh yeah, there's that moment in the final scene where Dugan tells Ned to finish off Eric. "Finish him off". Remember, these are high school kids lol. Anyways, this wasn't completely terrible and there are some things I like sprinkled around in the film. It's not the same without Daniel Larusso and his dynamic with Miyagi, but Swank delivers a good enough performance to slightly compensate for it. Anyone with a brain can't watch this without acknowledging its flaws and ludicrous plot points though. It's harmless and can be somewhat entertaining, but ultimately it's a fart-in-the-wind addition to the franchise. See more
