What to Know

Critics Consensus

Next Friday lacks the fun of the original Friday. The movie is messy and plotless and relies on unfunny vulgar gags.

Next Friday will eventually be remembered as a disposable farce, but one that leaves a happy memory. Go to Full Review

While outwardly amusing, with plenty of scatological and farcical gags, it is an example of the kind of diminishing sequel that the early 2000's would deliver in spades. Go to Full Review

Sadly, Epps's effort to replace Tucker as Cube's sidekick only downgrades the sequel. Otherwise, Next Friday has more of everything -- More importantly, however, Next Friday packs in more gags than the original. Go to Full Review

Poe W Mar 9, 2019 Looks like the main "professional" reviewers have NO IDEA what they're talking about on this one.
Draco S Jan 7, 2018 Less funny in every way than the original, egregious use of poop humor, but the Mexican neighbors were a highlight
Anakin L Oct 13, 2017 Completely forgettable sequel in no way touches the original
Albus L Oct 3, 2017 The sequel has none of the charm of the original film, the liveliness of Tucker is the ingredient missing here. Ice Cube is notorious for playing the same character, never extends from the basic humour and the film suffers for it. One of the key issues is the recycled plot elements, not uncommon for sequels, e.g. The Hangover part 2. The film needed more development and some depth injected into the story, the film hinged off the success of the forst film and is quite tiresome to watch. 03-10-2017. See more
Albus S Jul 23, 2017 Not as original as the original, well duh. And it might have suffered from taking the setting out of South Central. Part of what made "Friday" so engaging was the lighter look at life in a neighborhood that is more often portrayed as quite dangerous. Still, there is always some fun to be had in the "fish out of water" story. The other part that made it so fun was the manic energy of Chris Tucker whom unfortunately skipped this entry. That sounds like a lot going against and yet it's still funny as hell! No one can replace Smokey, in fact Craig makes lament that reminds of that, "My boy Smokey is in Rehab. And with how much he smokes, no telling when he getting out. I sure miss him." But they did attempt to fill the hole he left with Curry, Vargas and of course Mike Epps. All three men are funny as hell with Epps as the standout for his remarkable chemistry with Ice Cube. Plus, John Witherspoon is back! I dig this whole series and even though they do decline in quality, I'd be just fine with a fourth go around with these characters. Especially if they bring back Smokey! See more
Finn G Jul 17, 2017 Alright, this movie had some issues. Quite a bit. Starting with the very cartoonish turn. And the really annoying characters (Dede, Baby Joker, Pinky, Deebo, Tyrone). And worst of all, it didn't have my homie Smokey in it. The first one is a classic, and this sequel is a mistake. But, I will admit, there are a few moments that I laughed. But, overall, I was disappointed with this. See more
